Housman and Thomas Hardy, two poets "with strikingly similar philosophies," were considered at the Winnipeg Poetry society Tuesday night in the hall of Rupert's Land College. The guest speaker was Mr. Hugh Molson.

British MP. from 1931 to 1935. Both poets believed there was no purpose In the universe, the speaker said, that human life was misfortune rather than a bless Ing. Whereas Hardy was obsessed with the pity of It, Housman weighed the advantages and disadvantages of being alive, how to face death, etc. Housman regarded little of his own poetry as worthy of being published; consequently, only two slim volumes.

26 years apart, were given the world. Hardy had been a poet In his youth, turned to novels, and reverted to poetry in his latter days. "Shropshire Lad" had contained some hint of the good in life especially with Rose Hartand. Last Poems presented Hous man's view that it was better to die young, that fortitude In facing death whenever it comes was praiseworthy. "Eight o'Clock" was read, and also "The West," in illustration.

'Canon J. O. Murray gave the chair to the new president, Mrs. Hugh Phillipps, who commented on the large proportion of the members who alligned themselves with one of the study groups: Spoken poetry, the Greek drama. Shakespeare, poetry and travel, Georgian poetry, poetry and nature, and modem poetry.

Mrs. G. R. Laycock, secretary, said the membership had now grown to 166. The outstanding event of the last year was the visit of Miss Marjorie Gullan, British choral reading advocate, who is shortly to return to Winnipeg.
