California Gov. Edmund G. (Pat) Brown, who had expected Johnson to campaign for him in California Saturday and Sunday in his uphill re-election battle against Ronald Reaganl put it philosophically: "In any campaign, 1 think it is a basic truth that the candidate who is running for an office has to make it on his own.

There is no transfer of popularity by others supporting his candidacy. In Illinois, Sen. Paul Douglas had counted on the President to boost his sagging fortunes against challenger Charles Percy. In Democratic Rep. Robert Duncan, who is in a tough match with GOP Gov Mark Hatfield for a U.S.

Stacey commented on Matth-eeussen's allegations of smear in the campaign: "When he proves this to the 44th district, then I'll become alarmed. Until he shows more proof that my materials aren't documented, I will not be concerned." Stacey said he obtained Mat-theeussen's record from Lloyds, a Lansing firm, and for the service. Mattheeussen said Stacey's charges Of high absenteeism are false.

As for the issue of Mattheeus-sen's mileage, Stacey said: "He is either getting 165 miles or he isn't. He is not riding the railroad. He is driving his car. Why is he charging for 165 when it actually is between 120- and 130 by highway?" Mattheeussen charges that an advertisement in a Dowagiac newspaper denotes Stacey is an incumbent. "I am not aware that we are claiming, any incumbency whatsoever." "said Stacey.

1) Non-Partisan Aid For Area Voters "A special feature in today's paper is an election tabloid that tells Southwestern Michigan voters all about the candidates and issues in next Tuesday's balloting. It's completely non-partisan, compiled by this newspaper in cooperation with a dozen Berrien county industrial firms. The firms are sponsoring the election supplement as a service to their employes and fellow citizens of the area. They are: Benton Harbor Engineering Works, Bendix Corporation, Whirlpool Corporation, Benton Harbor Malleable Industries, New, Products Corporation, Superior Steel Castings Company, Modern Plastics Corporation, Lake Shore Motor Transit Lines, National Standard Company, Michigan Standard Alloys, V-M Corporation and Auto Specialties Manufacturing Company. Take a long look at the supplement; mark it up at home or office and take it with you to the polls Tuesday.

Mattheeussen's statement to day said: Republican opponent, Lionel Stacey, is conducting one of the most shameful smear campaigns in the history of Michigan politics. These smears have included character assassination, untruth, innuendos and distortions. Today, I am exposing him and his whole campaign for what he is." ANSWERS CHARGES Two of Stacey's weapons have been Mattheeussen's alleged absenteeism from sessions of the House of Representatives and padding of mileage expense accounts. Mattheeussen produced a letter he said was from T. Thomas Thatcher, clerk of the House, saying Mattheeussen's attendance record was 93 per cent in 1965 and 91 per cent in 1966.

Total days absent for both sessions was 20. Stacey claims Mattheeussen missed 50 days. Another letter from Thatcher showed that Mattheeussen's method of computing travel expenses to and from Lansing is accurate. It is based on 165 miles, virtually all by rail.
