FIVE THE WINNIPEG EVENING TRIBUNE. WINNIPEG. MAN, THURSDAY. OCTOBER 1. 1936 (Vol.

XLVII. No. 236) FALSE ALARMS KEEP CITY'S FIREj FIGHTERS BUSY Mischievous boys, the bane of the lire department's existence, have been giving the city'i tire tighter more than the usual amount of trouble in recent months. Chief D. A.

Boulden informed the civic safety committee Wednesday. The fire department was railed out on 31 false alarms in August and 42 in September. Many of those came from the district between Arlington and Mc Phillips streets, while St. Mary1! ave. was another bad spot.

There has been a sudden increase In false alarms on Kinesway ave, in River Heights. The department, with the as sistance of the police, was doing everything; In its power to put a stop to this nuisance. There had been four convictions In Juvenile ourt, but for the most part they had been unable to catch the culprits. They just didn't pull lire boxes when these were watched, even from under cover. Stickers, placed on the glass of many fireboxes, pointed out that every alarm brought danger of Ioks of life.

This had checked the false alarms to some extent, particularly In Elmwood where there had been trouble previously. The August report of the department showed 192 tire calls, 1UJ actual tires, loss to buildings and contents S7.31U. The classification "actual fires" does not include chimney and pipe and furnace fires. FIRE HALL NOT LIKELY TO BE REPLACED The city safety committee decided, Wednesday, against asking the city for SfW.wiO to lluo.OiK) for a new No.

Behind the central body of the terminal are piers Into which the buses will back to receive their loads of passengers and freight. st. and York ave, was built about 1880, D.

A. Boulden, tire chief, said, and an addition had been put Ion in l'J. About six years ago replacement of the building was considered. At the 1931 elections ratepayers gave their approval, but the council iinally decided against spending the money. Site Not Ideal It has been argued that No.

'i Are hall is not suitably located, considering the way the city has grown, and that if the present hall is to be replaced a better site could be found. A report from James Smith, plumbing and building inspector, listed many defects in the building, particularly the older portion. There were minor cracks in the addition, but the south portion was badly cracked and the south wall and tower were leaning outwards several inches out of plumb. The hall had been badly designed, badly Cost of underpinning would come to several thousand dollars. The build ing wasn't worth it.

Temporary repairs mgde in recent years had not arrested settlement. Not Dangerous The committee was impressed but, when Mr. Smith assured them there was no immediate danger of the building "tumbling down" at present that it was not dangerous it was decided a bit of patching would have to do for this year at least. Aid. McLean, the chairman, suggested this be done.

A motion of Aid Mrs. McWilliams to this effect was carried unanimously.
