Pr. A Statesman reporter learned yesterday froin Sheriff Barber, of Hayes county, a few facts that settled the identity of the bandit. Just before the arrest of Makinson, Sheriff Barber went to Uvalda county on the information of the highwayman's pal who gave him away. He watched the houses of his lather and sister, Jane Thompson for his father and sister do live there; hoping to capture the highwayman when he returned home. Ot course he did not come, for he was captured in the manner set forth in this paner, on the next night after the sheriff left. Shi-riff Barber found that Makinson's father was a very poor, illiterate man, and the highwayman and a brother have been suspieioned as horse thieves for some time.

The father had a very costly gold watch which he wore, and the fact of a man known to be so poor wearing so valuable a watch caused a good deal of comment. So soon as the old gentleman found that his house was being watched by officers, I he left between two nights, and no 1 one knew where he had gone. The sheriff was of the opinion he started for Mexico, but perhaps he is on his way to this city to aid his son, as the letter received by i the mayor would indicate This in-1 formation from Sheriff Barber, of i Hayes county, settles the identity of the robber and the fact that his name is Makinson. The party mentioned I in the bill of sale published heretofore in The Statesman is not the highwayman, but his brother, of which fact Sheriff Barber has positive proof. Sheriff Barber also knows the names of the persons with whom the prisoner stayed while in Austin.

He also has quite definite information of the two other parties who were with him on hi3 raid here. Makinson and a negro had a very se: i-ous row in the county jail Monday. Makinson spit in the face of the negro, the negro resented the insult and the gallant knight of the road found a foeman worthy of his steel right then and there. Makinson was quite badly punished by the darkey and yesterday his face presented the appearance of a battle scarred soldier retired on a pension. Complimentary.

Local news was non est yesterday. Freight Ly rail to Lampasas is 85 eente; by wagon 50 cents; time just the same, llow is this Whv are not the gutters flooded in front bf the courthouse block. They are getting into a fearful condition. The water will be turned off from the citv mains to-day at 11 o'clock for three or four hours for the purpose of i setting a ah e. Not an election fight was reported anywhere in sight yesterday.

Indeed it "was more solemn than Sunday I among the anti-Bergers all day long, Mis Holmes was elected teacher of the primary grade by the school I board Mondav. The selection of the school site was postponed unui next. Monday afternoon. The farmers say that all the crops are suffering exceedingly for the need of rain. The early cotton crop is almost a failure from this cause.

Rain is the all-needful just now. E. von Boeckman is happy, and Le has a good reason to be, too. 1 here is a leedle pov at his house that is just not old at all, but weighs just thirteen pounds. That is what we call good luck.

To-dav is election in the eighth ward, and Capt. Thomas Sneed seems to have the whole tield to himself. It looks now as if he was the unanimous choice of all the voters of the ward. The new citv directory will be put into the hands of the printers this week and the work pushed forward as rapidly as possible. Great pains have been taken to make it perfectly reliable.

No one would have known there was an election in this city yesterday, if it had not been for the fact that all the saloons were closed. The average Austin man went to get a cool drink, and it occurred to them something was up. Mrs. Ludwig Schultz, the lady who was so frightened by rglars trying to enter her house, is at the point of death. The lady was so badly reight-ened that, owing to her state of health, serious results have followed, and the lady may loose her life.

The wool crop is nearly exhausted; but little is coming into the market. Stewart, Iglt hart Co. shipped, yesterday, y5uu pounds, and they stated to a statesman- representative that little more was expected at this market. New cotton is beginning to come in slowly. This firm purchased aiout fourteen bales yesterday.

The cotton, howtver, is exceedingly good. Prohibition would never no in this city. Every closed yesterday and it was comical to se-t about lOOO men trying to tempt their lips with a glass of ice water. When the saloons opened at 6 o'clock it was like a crowd rushidg into a circus to see the th-phant, and each saloon was oblig-d to ke two extri barkeepers to out -oda water, pop and lemonade to the thirsty. A vmt t.rirm riinwwav ripi'iirrerl on the avenue yesterday," or what came near proving a very serious one.

A lumber wagon loaded" with boxes was passing along and the top of the boxes was a boy. The boy acci-dently fell from the boxes between the horses. This frightenel them and they started to run. The boy was caught by the harness and dragged between the running steals. The team was caught, however, before the bov was killed.

J. W. li. Tnbln. Austin: Dear Sirs Having during the year used the remedy prepared by you, known as Ilepatozone, I take pleasure in stating that it has proved to be what its name implies, a Liver remedy I have found no alterative and purgative more certain or freer from unpleasant effects, and none so efficacious in arousing a torpid liver to the performance of its proper functions.

H. Tobin, Austin, Texas: After having made numerous trials of Ilepatozone I am induced to recommend it. It is without doubt a most valuable remedy. I have been satisfied with the results obtained where I have used it. I find that it acts very promptly In arousing the secretions and relieving engorgment of the most important organs of the body.

When its medical virtues are more generally known I believe it will be kept in most families. J. C. Stovall M. D.

H. Tobin. Austin I have tried your Ilepatozone as a sort of last resort to prevent the frequently recurring headaches to which I have been subjected for eight or ten years, and unhesitatingly pronounce it more beneficial than any medicine I have ever tried. The market is flooded with "low-priced" baking powders, gotten up to make an unjust profit by unscrupulous manufacturers and dealers, and it is worthy the attention of all housekeepers to note there is at least one brand of baking powder distinctly sold upon its merits, and which can be relied upon for uniform strength and purity. The Royal Baking Powder, now known almost the world over as a standard article, has stood the test of nearly a quarter of a century, and its friends among the ladies are legion. A Rare Treat. J. XX. IIEADBPiJTII, Bnlesmai herbs in conjunction with salines you have since presented to the public under the name of "Tobiu's Ilepatozone," In doing so you have con-i erred a great boon on people living in a hot, semi-tropical climate like ours, where diseases of the liver are i so prevalent. It is the daily expe- rience of every physician to find peo-j pit ruining their constitutions by the I excessive use of strong mercu rial purgatives. A still larger number constantly use so-called "liver regulators," mostly composed of aloes and other drastic purgatives, which only tend to produce piles and other troublesome affections of the lower bowels.

To all such sufferers your medicine will be an invaluable aid in restorinjr them to health again, and I feel assured that it only requires to be known to be appreciated, and that people will cease destroying their constitutions by the reckless and dangerous abuse of mercurials now in vogue. Hepatazoiie contains no hurtful drug, and yet it is signally efficient as a liver medicine. I may remark just here that I am not violating medical ethics in truthfully gi ving you my opinion of a medicine which 1 have used myself with benefit, the formula of which you did not hesitate to show to ine. Above all, it affords me great I pleasure to know that you have placed your medicine (composed only of costly drugs) within the reach of the poorest man or woman. Respectfully, W.

Texas: Gents Enclosed find draft for 37, same being amount in full 0' our account with you to date. Your Ilepatozone sells well and has given per-fact satisfaction so iar. Many claim it to be the best medicine for what it is recommended to do of any they have ever used. Very respectfully, C. E.

Smith, Dispensing Druggists. INSTITUTION FOR THE BLIND, Austin, Mav 10, 1883. Drs. Tobin Your "Ilepatozone" as a gentle purgative has no equal. It moves the bowels without making the patient feel sick, weak or languid.

It is often the case that we feel a little bilious, have some headache perhaps, and are feeling unwell generally, and only need uneasy purgative to relieve us; your "Ilepatozone" is the medicine for that condition. I relieved a i-ase of dysentery with it in a very short time We use it largely in this institution. Frank Rainey, Sup't Institution. 0t Set Ions About It. (Brooklyn Eagle.

Despite the speculative energy of our Republican contemporaries, we are confident that the old ticket will not be again put in the field, and that there is no serious thought anywhere of presenting it. To Demnition How-wows. Courier Journal. The Boston Herald says: "The Democrats in congress will know just what they are doing if they elect Mr. Randall speaKer." If they don't, we do.

They will be sending the Democratic party to demnition bow-wows, and giving the Republicans an eternal lease upon the presidency. ot in a Minority. Memphis Avalanche. Politically classified, the new seriate stands thirty-eight Republicans, thirty-six Democrats, and two Readjustee. In point of ability the Democrats are at least not in a minority, as they have Beck, Garlands Lamar, Morgan, Colquitt, Harris, Butler, Ransom and McPherson, while the Republicans will make a fair show with Edmunds, Hoar, Frye, Plumb, Sherman, Hawley, Wilson' Hale, Conger and Ingalls.

To Quarantine Against Him. Cincinnati Times-Star. 1 The report is that Gov. Butler intends making a political tour of the South, at the suggestion of John Kelly, who appears to be manager-in-chief of Butler's presidential campaign. It is considered important to work up a Southern boorA.

If the newspapers of that section are exponents of public opinion, Butler goes on a fool's errand. New Orleans is likely to quarantine against him. Stop Saddling the Mnsiang. Dakota Journal. An exchange asserts that Iowa can exceed Texas for murders.

Texas is an abused state, statistics prove that Iowa, Illinois and Mississippi have fully as many murders as the Lone Star state, while Missouri leads the van. The habit of newspapers in calling every crime, no matter where committed, fit for a Texan, does the people of the state a great injustice, who by the way are among the most intelligent and intellectual in the United States. For a change, give Texas a holiday, and saddle notoriety of this class where it belongs. The Two Sets. IThe New American.

There are two distinct social sets at Newport, which are led respectively by the Astors and the Vanderbilts. The Astor set represents the landed gentry; it is solidly A me ican, and doesn't care a trade dollar for insignia and flummery. The Vanderbilt coterie has pushed the president's English almost to the point of dropping the h's. It never rides, it "drives." It always goes up to town, don't you know. It wears "top-coats," and the women have given up dresses for "gowns." It has got to calling its baggage "traps," and pretends to like rather tozerv weather.

It has also got the English supercil iousness aown verv fine: the blank. dull stare of vacancy is worked admirably; it shows equipoise of character, and it affects a slight contempt for everything American that commands something like awe. Senor Juan Valera. minister at T.is- bon, since March, 1881, is spoken of at Jiaurid as minister at ashington in place of the late Senor Barca. A dispatch received by Monroe Mil ler late yesterday afternoon, states that his brother Jeff is not dead, but his right leg has been amputated, and uie doctors nave no hopes ot his recovery. Nothing further was learned as to the facts that lead to the fatal affrav. An exchange says: Informa tion from Monterey says Jeff Miller, brother of the well known Monroe Miller, of Austin. was killed at Monterey last Sunday. Miller went on a spree, became very disorderly, and is said to have insulted several respectable ladies.

The police at tempted to arrest him, when he shot two, one fatally and the other danger ously. Miller was soon after over powered by a squad of policemen armed with sabres. The sabres were freely used, and he soon became disabled, and was conveyed to the carcel or prison, where he remained until his death. Affairs en the border were never more critical as to serious trouble than now, and only the better classes of Mexicans are opposed to an apparent movement to drive all Americans from the country. Pick-Ups on the Field. Saturday was a very hot day for "inuns to be in fashion. The Prints were in such poor play- that one of their best players failed to cash a half-grown "lowl. The cake to be passed turned out to be "pi." The claim to be made of nine to a "goose egg," if the Reds did not show up, was found to be a rotton egg. The Prints are all "out of sorts" and that's what's the matter with "lianna." A "painful in one run on the second inning.

The score was large, but the Prints say with practice they can Turner tiown. The colonel doesn't like the badgering of the boys. The Reds claim they could have mad more runs if they had not been fatigued, and vet they were not as "tired" aa the Prints. The dry goods trade was depressed Saturday. Prints could have been bought cheap.

"I'll be blowed if I don't catch that fly." He failed, and the boys "guyed." The Rosadalis. Rosadalis is a sovereign remedy for all diseases of the blood. It has no equal for the cure of nervous disorders. Read this certificate: I would like to bear testimony to the merits of Rosadalis, by saying that some eight years ago I was totally prostrated and could get no relief from our family physician, but after taking one bottle of Rosadalis I became entirely restored to health. I now weigh 175 pounds, but when I first took your medicine I weighed only 130.

I cheerfully recommend it to all, and espechdly to those afflicted with nervous debility. Mrs. A. A. Maron, Baltimore, Md.

Of Interest to Parents. Aa will be seen by an announcement elsewhere in our columns, Mrs. Sara A. Miller opens her school for little children on the 3d of September. This lady has earned an enviable reputation by the manner in which she has taught the children under her charge in the past, and we predict much success for her in the future.
