YflLLIAMS Redlands Daily Facts 22-Friday, April 30,1965 TELEVISION IN REVIEW By RICK DU BROW HOLLYWOOD (UPI) — The big Saturday treat in the New York neighborhood where I was brought up was to be packed off, with lunch in a brown paper bag, to a local movie house fondly nicknamed "The Itch" because of its general condition. The matrons there all looked like Wallace Beery, and I don't know how many times they slugged us kids for howling with gleeful disbelief at those crazy short films about exotic, remote-type sports (to us) that filled in during the double-or iriple-feature breaks. I mean, here we were sitting in "The Itch," and there they were showing us some films about a guy sailing his yacht off Ceylon. Or maybe it was about tree-climbing in Tasmania or polo in Algiers. It all seemed like that, anyway. I never saw a film about baseball or football. Well, times have changed — maids own boats, brown paper bags simply aren't what they use<l to be, and ABC - TV's "Wide World of Sports" has made events like the national skydiving championships almost as routine an occurrence for the televiewer as the World Se ries. And what I am getting around to is that "Wide World of Sports" marks its fourth anniversary Saturday — showing the Tournament of Champions golf competition at Las Vegas and stock car racing at Day- lona, Fla.—and I just wantec to say happy birthday, "Wide World of Sports." I wanted to say that because "Wide World of Sports,' with rare exceptions, is really an accomplishment each week. Although ABC-TV is the small- •st network. "Wide World of iports" is still the best sports ;how on national television and las caused its competing broad"asters to come up with imita- ions, none of which has sur- •ived as steadily or as long. CBS-TV tonight will present a :pecial program, "An Hour Vith Ed JIurrow," dealing with he c.ireer of the noted reporter vho died Tuesday. The program, vhich begins at 8:30 p.m. EOT, s mainly a first peryin chronicle of Murrow's 25 years as a BS radio and television correspondent in the form of excerpts from his broadcasts. Two of his colleagues. Eric Sevareid and Charles Collingwood. will ntrodu.e the program and provide the continuity. The Channel Swim: pope D aul will deliver a message rom Rome Monday during \BC's two-hour United States- Europe telecast of the "TJxiay" Drogram via the new Early Bird Satellite.
