Teen-agers now earn at east 50 per cent of their spending money tending for children, i These young people must shoulder a tremendous responsibility when the "stand-in" for parents. To aid teen-agers in meeting such responsibility and to help hem make a success of their baby-sitting business, a special guide entitled "When Teen-agers Take Care of Children" has >een prepared by the Children's Sureau of the Department of lealth. Education and Welfare, t is written by Ivor Kraft, specialist on parent education and child development for the Bu•eau. Helpful hints offered in the ntroductory chapter include pecial pointers for both the een-age girl and boy babysitter. Girls are warned against long personal phone calls (which tie up the line in case the parents attempt to call home) and placing socializing activities over sitting responsibilities. Girls should always make sure they are seen home after late sitting appointments. Boys are warned against overdoing refrigerator privileges — "WHENEVER THE SITUATION looks as though it might be serious, call parents or doctor at once," advises U. S. Children's Bureau in the new booklet, "When Teenagers Take Care of Children." "It's okay to make a sandwich, but don't eat the whole ham" — and excess roughhousing with the children. All sitters are warned to check out ads for baby-sitting jobs very carefully.
