Mrs. William Tyler is quite seriously ill. A trained nurse is in attendance and the young son has been removed to the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Glover.

Mrs. Lewis Welch is visiting in Stowe and Montpelier. Fred Ravelin has been, in Burlington, having treatment for throat. Officers elected for the Congregational Sunday school were: Superintendent, Robert W. Palmer; assistant superintendent, Mrs.

G. S. Bulwell; treasurer, Margaret Knowles; secretary, Miss Alice Seabury; assistant Miss Annie Dorothy, Palmer. The collections for the following year will all be taken in church and be one fund, out of which the different departments of church work will be supported. Supt.

Palmer has received the state library of about twenty-five volumes, which will be used by teachers in the school union. A large per cent. of these are on child-study. Officers elected by the Christian Endeavor society last Sunday evening for Master Wiltse Brisbrin is quite ill with the measles. J.

F. Shipman fell last week on the ice and injured his hip, which it was at first feared was broken. The Misses Emma and Helene Shipman of Boston are home. W. H.

B. Perry fell, cutting his hand on some ice, so that it was necessary to consult medical advice. Rev. W. L.

Boicourt had a most helpful and practical sermon upon the child labor question Sunday. Miss Norma Perkins played a violin solo at the Congregational church. Mrs. V. L.

Perkins has not been as well the past week. The Modern Priscilla club met with Mrs. F. E. Atkins Friday evening.

Fred Crandall, a former, resident of Jonesville, was killed Onana Station, last Tuesday in a train wreck. The four- year-old son of Henry Smith of Castleton fell into a tub of hot water recently and was badly burned, although it is thought he will recover. Mrs. Parmalee of Enosburg Annette. Falls, the noted suffragist, fell on the ice in her home town Thursday, breaking her right arm and dislocating her wrist.

Mark J. Russell resigned as street superintendent of St. Johnsbury recently, after, holding that position for 29 years. Herbert C. Douglass has been appointed in his place.

Mrs. Julia Laurie, aged 87 years, of Jonesville, will probably die as the result of injuries received when she fell down stairs at her home recently. She was severely injured about the head. Mrs. A.

A. Emery of St. Albans received the first prize from Vermont for the best recipe in which one of Armour preparations were used. This Was a rule for lunch relish and is printed in the Armour's January cook book. Despite every effort no trace has been found of George White or Warner, who escaped from the Brattleboro retreat several weeks ago.

It is expected that his body will be found in the woods in the vicinity of Chesterfield. News has been received of the death of Rev. William J. Heath, aged 78 years, a former pastor of the Burlington Methodist church, which occurred January 22 at Pittsburg. Pa.

Mr. Heath was pastor of the Burlington Methodist church in 1874, 1875 and 1876. The Marquita has plied the waters of lake Champlain for 300 days out of 365 and will be used until the lake freezes, thus making an almost year-round service. Several establishments in Burlington, which use a large amount of ice, are contemplating unless buying ice-making plants of their ice is formed outside of the breakwater within the next two weeks, L. F.

Pike of Isle La Motte threshed in January 15,356 bushels and 20 pounds of that were raised on four acres of land, or 89 bushels and five pounds to the May 9 he sowed bushels by band. The oats were cut August 19 and drawn into his barn SO they were very dry when threshed. The land had no extra fertilizer or fitting and no extra care taken to avoid the usual waste in harvesting. Beans were planted on this land the year before. The students of the three upper the University of Vermedical, mont, Burlington, have presented 8 handsome silver loving cup to Dr.

Charles F. Dalton of that secretary of the state board of health. Doeto: Dalton was for several years a professor in the college of medicine, until his resignation last December, when he aecepted his present position with the state board. Nearly all the members of the three upper classes have been his pupils. Eight cases of beer, 16 quarts of whiskey, two jugs of liquor, and a half barrel of ale were returned to John Clay, of Burlington, Friday after it had been housed in the rear of the police station for considerably more than a year.

In city court Clay had been bound over to county court on a charge of keeping liquor on hand with intent to sell, but no evidence that he sold liquor was introduced, and the case WAS nolle prossed several months ago, Through some oversight no order for the return of the goods was issued at that time. Funeral of Rev. Henry M. Springer. White River Junction, Jan.

28. -The funeral of Rev. Henry M. Springer, a farmer and retired Methodist minister, took place from the White River Junetion Methodist church. yesterday afternoon, Rev.

S. H. Smith presiding and a male quartet furnishing music. The 4 Masons attended the services, assisting in the exercises. Mr.

Springer had been in ill health for some time and was in the early seventies. He came to Vermont some eight or nine years ago from North Dakota, where he was presiding elder of a district. He was in the Civil war, serving three years in the cavalry. Surviving him are his wife and several children, one a missionary in India, and another, Isaac, living in Barre, manager in a granite company. LEVEES HOLD OUT FLOOD.

Memphis Is Safe, Engineers Declare, Despite River Rise of Six Inches. Memphis, Jan. -Despite a rise of six inches in the last twelve hours the Mississippi's flood tide will be safely held by the levees in this district, engineers declared yesterday. The river yesterday morning stood at 38.7. EAST MONTPELIER.

Auditors' Meeting. There will be a meeting of the auditors of the town of East Montpelier at the town clerk's office on January 30, 1913, at 9 a. to audit the accounts of the town officers. Also at the same time and place there will be held a meeting of the board of civil authority for the abatement of taxes.
