Well, if this what America wants, I feel as equipped as the next person to provide it.

A friend of mine rakes her carpet. She uses a bamboo rake, which is similar to a leaf rake, to rake her shag carpet. "It really fluffs it up," she says. I think there is a tremendous risk here of suffering a lifetime of ridicule if someone drops in unexpectedly while she is raking her carpet. If you have a regular carpet, you might do what I do: Get a 1-foot-length of 2-by-4 board and glue a brick to the middle of the top side.

Attach the two ends of a length of twine to either end of the board and drag it around the room. It makes the same track as a vacuum cleaner, leaving the appearance of a vacuumed carpet, and burns no electricity at all. My friend also fills nail holes with toothpaste prior to painting. If you want to try this, I suggest getting the most cavity-fighting toothpaste on the market and covering the entire wall, thereby preventing nail holes in the first place. Fur and feathers from indoor pets are a problem for some people.

To cut down on this, keep your puppies, kittens and canaries in the refrigerator. They will eat less and "keep" longer. To fill in empty corners in rooms and shelves, a single, small handful of spiders will do the trick. I have actually been asked, on one occasion, "Who does your interior webbing?" If the stores are out of spiders, I'll be glad to give you some. And to protect your television screen from the BBs you chunk at it whenever the well-known yipping jackal Pat Buchanan is on, I have found that a drape of clear plastic wrap serves nicely.

How you get the BBs out of the carpet, I am not sure, but I think you might want to reach for your jar of tacky cloth. break wave As some water, plants its At and heat Pee-wee could have video alibi From Staff and Wire Reports Paul Reubens' lawyers think they might have come up with an out for their client, better known as Pee-wee Herman. So the current issue carries 12 whole pages of handy hints for "real-life solutions to everyday problems." Helpful household hints have always been an intriguing phenomenon to me. I am basically of the opinion that most real-life situations around the home can be successfully ignored. They don't go away, but after a while you get used to them, don't notice them, and so no longer have a problem. And I am never quite certain that a lot of these real-life situations enjoy anything approaching universality. Some guy will, for example, want to know how to get bacon grease off his roof.

I try to arrange my life so that this situation never presents itself at my house and if it does, 111 go on vacation. But apparently, some people do not have this rational and healthy approach. Here is one of Family Handyman's handy hints: "To remove a furniture dent in the carpet, put an ice cube in the depression. The fibers will swell to normal as the ice melts." I don't know about you, but I like to walk around my house in my bare feet. I do.

I like to feel the carpet, soft and warm, directly on the soles of my trotters. I would not want to be landing on a lot of icy little wet spots and think, "This is wretched and miserable, but it's all worth it because even as I am leaping in the air and going the fibers in my furniture dents are swelling." I have personally discovered, in this particular regard, that if you never move the furniture, you don't have to worry about furniture dents. A quick, easy and absolutely free method. Here's another one: "Start nails or brads without mashing your fingers by slipping the nail between the teeth of a pocket comb." Well, that is pretty ingenious, unless you happen to be applying the nail to the under side of a surface, in which case you're going to have nails plummeting into your nostrils. Not a pretty thought.

And: "Make your own tacky cloths by dropping a small amount of poly-urethane from a stirring stick onto a cheesecloth. Knead the cloth to distribute the tackiness, then store in a jar." Sound advice indeed. What the devil is a tacky cloth? I have reached a George will Susan Sarandon soul can make in the world.
