The airport office door slowly opened, and a man poked his head out, looking both ways before emerging.

He carried a small box to the airport tarmac where a four-seat passenger plane was parked. He glanced behind him, and stealthily set the box behind one of the plane's tires and disappeared. Soon, a group of teenage Civil Air Patrol, or CAP, members (arrying radio equipment strode from the airport building and began assembling an antenna. The mission of this search and rescue training exercise was to find the box that is used in airplanes and is activated upon impact in a crash. One cadet tuned the radio, finding the beacon's frequency.

Using the equipment, the teenagers found the box after a 10-minute search of the grounds. "It was harder than it should have been. The signal was bouncing off of cars and buildings," said Jacob Joyce, 15, of Edgar. "We practice stuff like this so that we get good at it." Activities such as this one practiced Tuesday night is one of the reasons Jacob said he enjoys being a cadet in the Civil Air Patrol. "But I really like doing this because when something happens in my community, I feel good knowing I can help people when it does," Jacob said.

While it's commonly assumed that being a member of Civil Air Patrol means flying in aircraft, its scope includes much more. "Sure, I really like flying, but we've also made rockets. The aerospace education is pretty good. I've made a rocket powered with Alka-Seltzer tablets and another one that used compressed gas," Jacob said. Jacob's younger brother Joshua, 13, also is a member, as is his father, Jim Joyce.

"This is fun. We learn lots of new things, and it's also a way to someday help in the community," Joshua said. The family was introduced to the central Wisconsin area Civil Air Patrol by a friend from THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Hayley Kiyoko, left, and Naomi Scott, star in the new Disney Channel movie "Lemonade Mouth." 'Lemonade Mouth' stars groom own style By Samantha Crttcuell The Associated Press NEWYORK Hayley Kiyoko and Naomi Scott are the next generation of Disney Channel starlets, and these BFFs are getting a crash course in signing autographs, security guards and singing on live TV. Makeup artists color their lips while others are doing their hair, and stylists have rolled racks into a Manhattan hotel from which they can choose their wardrobe. They hit the media circuit and have a premiere to attend before last Friday's debut of the TV movie "Lemonade Mouth," about kids forming a band.

But if this whole experience has been just weird, just crazy" Scott's words dressing the part hasn't been. Kiyoko, 20, seems poised to become a fashion force, gravitating toward funky styles, wearing a leather cowboy shirt and shorts with tights. She even pulls off the leather fanny pack that she feels fairly passionate about. love the fanny pack because I hate bringing those Mary Poppins big bags everywhere," she said. "I can wear this and keep my stuff safe and I can always reach my phone and lip Her taste is "left of center," and while she enjoys very much the self-expression that comes with fashion, the shopping part is mediocre, she said.

The maximum time limit at the mall for this Los Angeles-area native is 90 minutes. Scott, 17, would rather be shopping for candy and other sweets, although she likes the occasional spin through a Zara or an AllSaints shop. "Fashion" isn't really her thing, she said, although she's quickly realizing that paying attention to her clothes and her beauty and grooming routines are all part of her job. Looking good exudes a confidence that she hopes her new tween fans will learn, she said, but she wants the emphasis to be on a good, healthy outlook, not on perfection. church, Joyce said.

"I was so impressed with the respect the kids have for each other, and the program is a good education, plus you're doing something good for your community," Joyce said about being members of the Composite Squadron WI-183. Membership in the Civil Air Patrol based in Stevens Point is open to anyone ages 12 through 20, with the cadets under the leadership of Robert Kulp, 18, of Stratford. "The cadets run their program with adult oversight," said Terese Barta, the squadron's commander. There are no prerequisites for adult membership, said Barta of Stevens Point. After Barta received her pilot's license, she joined as a way to provide community service.

Lake Barta, Harry Dolan of Marshfield joined to serve his community. But serving in CAP has the added bonus of being an organization both Dolan and his son Patrick enjoy together. t's a great peer group. All the time my son wants to put into this is great. The older kids are a very good influence," Dolan said.

Another benefit of CAP is it's based on a military model, so that it gives the cadets an introduction into that form of service, said Kulp who is the cadet squadron commander. The military was an avenue Kulp said he considered, but serving in CAP affirmed for him that he wants to be a missionary pilot, he said. "The experience in Civil Air Patrol gives all of us the experience and exposure to show us what we are good at," Kulp said.
