The cause of trans-state sour feelings? An ad slogan for an electronic device that allows stolen cars to be tracked. "Car thieves: Fort Worth has Teletrack. Try El Paso," the billboards boast. No one in El Paso thought the campaign was funny.

"I thought it was very offensive," said Barbara Perez, president of the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Angry calls and letters have poured in from officials including El Paso City Councilman Joe Pickett. "I do not encourage El Pasoans to bad-mouth fellow Texans, and expect the same from our neighbors, close and distant, within our great state," Pickett wrote to Fort Worth Mayor Kay Granger. Ron May, ad manager for Pac Tel Teletrack, said his company knew El Paso had an average autotheft rate. But May's agency didn't take note of El Paso's low rate of recovering stolen vehicles, which often quickly disappear across the Mexican border.

May has apologized. "It was simply meant as a marketing promotion," May said. "It just as easily could have been Kalamazoo." "They didn't know that the people here are sensitive about it," Perez said Friday. "I don't think they did it intentionally." jar ynm ample of 19th century vernacular architecture. Smith House given facelift by Heritage Society Deaths and funerals By Debbie Hiott American-Statesman Staff David Fritz Sr. never displayed any warning of the violence that led him to kill his brother and seriously wound his teen-age son before killing himself, the youth's stepfather and a family friend said.

"He had never at any time exhibited any violent tendencies," said Don Crawford of Austin, a friend of the family. "We really were not concerned about violence." Police have not determined a motive in last week's murder-suicide. Fritz used a 9 mm semiautomatic weapon to shoot his brother Kermit Fritz, 39, of Austin, and son, David Fritz II, 13, of Abilene, as they approached his house at 2208 Mahone Ave. on Thursday. Kermit Fritz died later that day at Brackenridge Hospital.

Meanwhile Saturday, David Fritz II was moved from intensive care and was in fair condition, said Robin Griffin, a hospital spokeswoman. He received bullet wounds in the chest and leg, his stepfather said. Police say after shooting his brother and his son, David Fritz Sr. then retreated into his residence and turned a shotgun on himself as an explosion and fire engulfed the house. The blaze apparently started in a garage and was accelerated by some type of liquid, fire investigators have said.

Crawford and the youth's stepfather, Jim Robertson of Abilene, said David Fritz Sr. had a history of mental illness caused by a chemical imbalance. Crawford said Fritz had refused in the past to take medication for the illness. ters, Sister Jean Ann Wesselman, DC, Pat Briggs and husband, Stan, both of Austin; sons, Donald E. "He would call and say 'Dad's not able to take care of me. He's feeling Robertson said. He said, on those occasions, Fritz usually suffered from severe migraines. Crawford said Fritz was a gun collector and owned at least two valuable antique guns. Robertson said David Fritz II has not talked about the shooting since Thursday when he spoke to police at the hospital.

He said his stepson may have forgotten what happened because of trauma, but counselors were working with him to help him understand. Robertson said donations to help with hospital and funeral costs can be made to University Christian Church, 2007 University Ave. Two funds have been set up, one for Kermit Fritz's widow Rhonda and another for David Fritz II. guidance. We dedicate It to Sarah Ann, but share it with all those living with the unique pain of losing an Infant. Love does not come In sizes; It cannot be measured by the length of a life. All the pain and sorrow in your heart Is there because you have loved. Don't turn away from your child's brief moment with you; Trust your broken heart. In time you will know its wisdom; Love Is stronger than death.

Funeral services will be Monday at University United Methodist Church, with Reverend David Mln-nich officiating. Graveside services Monday, Oddfellows Cemetery in Hamilton, Texas. For those of us who knew Kermit, we remember a man of outrageous character. His hilarious style and sense of humor could lift any occasion Kermit was the type made himself available for any friend in need. Kermit donated countless hours of his time and energy to several worthwhile causes such as local community theater and volunteer work for ASA's fund raising cotillions.

He was also involved In the University Methodist Church and choir. Perhaps most Importantly, Kermit could always be counted on to be a shoulder for any of his many friends. In the words of one friend "Kermit was there for me when my son died, and I have always thought of him as family." Kermit had a flair for the extravagant and enjoyed the limelight. These qualities made him more endearing and a joy to be around. He was well known for his many elaborate costumes such as Phantom of the Opera.

These characters he brought to life for us will live on in our memories forever. Kermit, you will be deeply missed thank you for the tremendous pleasure of your company. We love you. Arrangements by Weed-Corley Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar, 452-8811..
