Anderson Lamar pm Mon. -Sat. Tiger, Maybe, just maybe, this will be the year of the Sockadillos. After two straight title-game appearances in its first two seasons in the Southwest Independent Soccer League, Austin's only indoor soccer team will kick off its season against the Houston Express on Saturday with high hopes that this is the year the Sockadillos end on top. Two years ago, the Sockadillos were swept in a three-game series by the Oklahoma City Warriors.

Last year, Austin ran off a 12-game winning streak to begin the year and ended at 19-5. In the finals, however, the Sockadillos lost the first two games on the road to the Lubbock Lazers. Returning home with their backs to the wall, the Sockadillos won two games to even the finals. The deciding game was played i immediately after the fourth, a strange occurrence in sports, but one Austin couldn't overcome, falling to the Lazers 2-1 and coming up short for the second straight year. Saturday's game, to be played at Tatu's All-Star Indoor Soccer Place, the Sockadillos' home arena, could be the start of a rough season for Sockadillos Coach Tony Simoes and his team.

Simoes, voted the SISL Coach of the Year last season, knows what it takes to be a winner in the world of soccer. A one-time World Cup AllStar, Simoes hopes to take the Sockadillos that last step this year. But it won't be easy. The league has expanded from its original fiveteam membership in 1986-87 to a total of 17 teams this year. And just didos: 1988 staff photo by Karen Warren Brian Monaghan of the Austin Sockadillos led the SISL in scoring last season with 71 goals and 14 assists.

nals in our first year," Kadkhodaian said. "Coming into the league new doesn't mean they don't know how to play. "The team from Dallas (the Richardson Rockets) has a large pool of players to pick from, plus they've been playing indoor soccer Dallas for 10 years," Kadkhodaian said. The Sockadillos owner said he is expecting a lot of competition from the Dallas-area teams, which along REUBEN'S JUST FLOWN IN FROM FRANCE!
