Age 88, of Valparaiso Indiana, died Friday, March 25 at his home after an acute bout of pneumonia. Perry was born December 5th 1922, in Cleveland Ohio, to Maurice and Olive Whalley.

He was predeceased by his only sibling, sister Dorothy Simonson (Dottie), and is survived by wife Lenna, three chil dren and six grandchildren. Perry met a beautiful young nurse, Lenna, at a local dance in Detroit and the couple eventually wed in 1952. After the birth of their first two children, Gwen Celeste Baldwin (Atlanta) and Marshall Perry Whalley (Valparaiso), Perry designed and built their home in Royal Oak, MI, where the couple had their third child Gregory Steven Whalley (Lapeer, MI). Perry and Lenna lived in Royal Oak for forty years, then moved to Lapeer to be close to grandchildren Steven and Sabrina Whalley, Perry and Lenna eventually moved to Valparaiso, IN, to spend time with grandchildren Savanna and Shelby Whalley. Perry and Lenna's remaining grandchildren, who were farther removed geographically but no less loved, are Sarah Baldwin (New York) and Daniel Baldwin (Roswell, Ga).

An exemplary and motivated student, Perry worked his way through Lawrence Institute of Technology receiving engineering degrees in electrical and civil engineering following which he attended M.I.T.. During college he excelled at fencing and played drums in a band with his good friend and classmate John Delorean, founder of the Delorean Motor Company. Perry was also a talented artist and a Mason. During World War II Perry enlisted in the Navy where he attained the rank of First Lieutenant. He served on a submarine where he help develop the worlds first sonar systems, following which he was stationed on Guam.

After receiving several medals Perry was honorably discharged and returned stateside to begin his career. A talented designer and draftsman Perry's professional career spanned over four decades. Initially working in the private sector he quickly established himself with his unique approach to problem solving. One of his first projects was designing a machine that put stripes in toothpaste! Bored with mundane tasks Perry Took a job with the government designing drivelines for tactical vehicles. Perry loved making tanks! After 35 years of distinguished service he attained the civilian equivalent of the military ranking of a Major General.

Early in his career he frequently traveled the globe negotiating contracts with foreign governments and spent considerable time field testing his tanks in distant venues such as Anartica and the Mojave desert. Perry was instrumental in developing the worlds first amphibious tank the agile "Gamma as well as myriad armored personnel carriers. He was also credited with the design of some of the worlds most advanced hydrostatic transmissions which later served as platform for modern day passenger vehicle automatic transmis sions. His government work also extended into other fields. Perry made significant contributions to the design and testing of the first lunar rover, and in 1970 when Apollo 13 experienced technical difficulties Perry was consulted to trouble shoot the severely damaged electrical system.

Apollo 13 brought our astronauts home safely in what was later termed the space programs first "successfully failed mission" Despite overwhelming professional obligations Perry's main focus was family. After years of planning, scrimping and saving on a government salary, Perry had a 1968 Pontiac Safari station wagon specially built to take his family on two, month long cross country treks that would include virtually every noteworthy stopping point in all the continental United States. Following that, he bought a fixer upper cottage on a local lake refurbished it then selflessly com muted everyday in the summer from the Warren Tank Automotive Command Center so that his family could enjoy the things he never experienced in his childhood. While Perry spent more time talking about fishing than actually wetting a line, he always made sure the cottage was outfitted with all the recreational equipment family and friends would ever need. Perry's one and only true and one that would not be denied, was unquestionably automo biles.

After Lenna, his first true love was a Packard with a big v-81 Over the years Perry would fix up and sell old cars to supplement his salary and provide funds for family vacations and the kids college. He also built, for his own enjoyment several collectors cars including a 1956 Porsche Speedster, a 56 T-bird and a 65 Mustang convertible. His personal daily driver was a coveted and rare 1964 Studebaker Avanti. He restored, maintained and drove his pride and joy until it was eventually sold to help pay for his daughters wedding. If you ask his sons they will tell you that their earliest, and fondest, memories of their father was "wrenching" on cars in the garage.

Perry was a kind and loving husband and father, a well respected engineer, a true renaissance man who devoted his life to his country and the selfless service of others. He will be greatly missed by all of us who were fortunate enough to have known him. Services will be held in the chapel at Acacia Park Cemetery, Beverly Hills Michigan 2 pm local time TODAY.
