Austin American-Statesman Sunday, November 12, 1989 College football: swcstate Irish Texas Tech stays red hot as Gray stomps on TCU wallop (: zi By Holden Lewis Associated Press LUBBOCK James Gray doesn't have Texas Christian to kick around anymore, and that's just fine with Horned Frogs Coach Jim Wacker. "Man, oh man, am I glad to see James Gray out of here next year. He's been a thorn in TCU's side for the past four years," Wacker said Saturday after Gray gained 209 yards and scored three touchdowns as No. 23 Texas Tech routed Texas Christian 37-7 in a Southwest Conference game. The red-hot Red Raiders (7-2 overall, 4-2 in the SWC) remain in the Cotton Bowl race.

TCU dropped to 4-6, 2-5. Texas Tech also is being looked at by several other bowls. Gray has rushed for 609 yards in four games against TCU, which didn't recruit him even though he graduated from Fort Worth's Trimble Tech, across town from TCU. On Saturday, he rushed for touchdowns of 14 and 16 yards and caught a 34-yard scoring pass. "I said before the game that James Gray was the best running back in the Southwest Conference, and probably the most underrated, too," TCU defensive tackle Fred Washington said.

Tech Coach Spike Dykes said fans will miss Gray, who played his last home game Saturday. "He has a unique style and he's hard to tackle. He's got good vision. His upper body never does move, and he kind of just oozes around and finds holes," Dykes said. Gray gave himself a B-plus for his effort.

"I'm never satisfied with my game," he said. Tech, whose upset of Texas last week led to its first national ranking since 1977, jumped to a 30-0 halftime lead and was never headed. Quarterback Jamie Gill threw first-half touchdown passes of 5 yards to Anthony Manyweather and 34 yards to Gray. Gray, Tech's career rushing leader, scored on a 16-yard run, and Anthony Lynn's 6-yard run capped Tech's first-half scoring. By halftime, Gray had amassed 170 yards rushing, including a 69-yard run on his third carry that put him over the mark for the season.

Gray, a senior who carried 19 times and sat out the fourth quarter, leads the Southwest Conference with 1,177 yards rushing. It was Gray's third 200-yard rushing game this season. Gray rose to third on the Southwest Conference's all-time touchdown list with 46 scores, passing Reggie Dupard of Southern Methodist, who had 43. Bill Burnett of Arkansas had 49 career touchdowns and Eric Dickerson of SMU had 48. TCU's only score, a 2-yard touchdown pass from Ron Jiles to Kelly Blackwell, capped a 43-yard drive that was set up by a Tech fumble in the third quarter.

Curtis Modkins led the Horned Frogs with 100 yards rushing on 23 carries. SMU By Jack Saylor Knight-Rldder News Service SOUTH BEND, Ind. Notre Dame scraped the bottom of the barrel Saturday with the bottom of its depth chart. Lou Holtz showed compassion. The Notre Dame coach used 92 players against Southern Methodist everybody except the lame and student managers.

He even or-j dered several deliberate delay-of-t game penalties to stall his team. Rusty Setzer even ran out of bounds at the 7, instead of continuing for another fourth-quarter touchdown. Despite their efforts, the Irish still throttled the outmanned Mus-, tangs 59-6 before 59,075 bemused fans in Notre Dame Stadium. The outcome, lifting the the No. 1 -ranked Irish to 10-0, ended the home portion of the season with a school-record 22nd straight victory.

"That's just starting to sink in and it's special," Holtz said. "And it's gratifying for our seniors (28) to 1 go three years here without losing 1 at home." The Irish had won 17 straight on i their storied field, and one of those i seniors, offensive tackle Dean Brown, already has it in perspective. "Oh yeah, I'll come back when i I'm 50 years old and have two national championship rings and a couple bald spots," he said with a wide smile. "I'll tell everybody how we won 22 in a row, how we were the best ever here better than Rockne, Leahy and all those guys." None of the previous 21 victories irf the Irish's string came quite this easily. SMU (2-7), with 54 freshmen among its 72 players, fully expected to have its problems with the po-j tent Irish running attack and crushes Angelo State claim Lone Star crown AP Notre Dame's Greg Davis (26) puts heavy pressure on Southern Methodist quarterback Mike Romo (5) during action in South Bend, on Saturday.
