OBITUARIES DETROIT FKEE PRESS WWW.FREEP.COM TUESDAY, FEB. 17, 2004 SD LA. Rev. Anne Garrison: Led many Ml lives -T Homer Case: Was leader in Bloomfield Township By JEANNE MAY FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER By JEANNE MAY FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER In some ways, the Rev. Anne Chamberlain Hodges Garrison was a typical 1930s woman: She left college without a degree to get married and raise a family.

But in others, she was a marvel: After 20 1 years she returned to college, earned a doctorate in English and medieval studies at Michigan State University and became a full-fledged professor in the College of Busi DEATHS ELSEWHERE Corinthian Nutter Led desegregation battle KANSAS CITY, Mo. Civil-rights pioneer Corinthian Nutter, a black teacher who helped desegregate schools in Merriam, years before the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education ruling, died Wednesday, friends said. She was 97. Ms.

Nutter taught at Walker Elementary, Merriam's school for black children in the late 1940s. The building was old and lacked plumbing, and students used supplies other schools discarded. When the school district constructed a new building for white children nearby, Merriam's black community rallied to form an NAACP chapter and sued the district in 1948. Nearly all the families with children at Walker pulled them from class, and Ms. Nutter taught students in homes.

Later, she became a key witness in the suit, testifying about conditions at her school. In 1949, the Kansas Supreme Court ruled against the chairman of the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments, and he was a past president of the Bloomfield Lions Club. Mr. Case belonged to two churches, the Royal Oak and the Birmingham Church of Christ and was an elder at the latter. When he could find a minute to himself, he liked to fool around with computers and cameras.

He was the family photographer. "It was hard finding pictures of him because he was always the guy behind the camera," his son said. Besides his son, survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mary; another son, David; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at the Price Funeral Home, 3725 Rochester Road, Troy, with burial in White Chapel Memorial Cemetery, Troy.

When her kids passed the baby stage, she worked as a translator of scientific texts for the MSU Regional Poultry Labs and of a Swiss book about the impact of World War II on children. "She translated from several languages German, Russian, French and Italian," her son Daniel said Monday. "She had a good memory for vocabulary, and she studied languages and there was a lot of self-tutoring that went into it, too." When she went back to college, she earned a bachelor's degree, then her doctorate, for which she translated a 12th-Century book from Latin.

While she studied, she taught introductory English classes and wrote and edited Business Topics, a monthly publication of the business school. After she got her doctorate, she taught business writing. When she hit the mandatory retirement age of 65, she started her theological studies. She joined the MSU Campus Ministries after she was ordained, serving without salary. Rev.

Garrison championed the causes of gays and lesbians in the church, civil rights, the ordination of women and the antiwar movement, and she wrote for the diocesan newsletter. She and a colleague organized a Sunday evening ecumenical group for gays who felt unwelcome in other churches. She belonged to All Saints Episcopal Church in East Lansing, and was active in the Lansing Urban League. In 1994, she moved to Evans-ton, where she joined the staff at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church.

"She joined the unpaid clerical staff there and did some concele-bration of the eucharist there," her son said. After a year, illness forced her retirement. Her husband died in 1958. Besides her son, survivors include another son, Andrew; a daughter, Rebecca Tracy; five grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. The funeral will be private.

Arrangements are by the Donnellan Family Funeral Services, Evans-ton. The family suggests memorial donations to Amnesty International, 322 Eighth New York, NY 10001, or the American Civil Liberties Union, 60 W. Hancock, Detroit 48201. Contact JEANNE MAY at 586-469-4682 or mayfreepress.com. Homer Whatley Case, the longtime supervisor of Bloom-field Township, died of heart disease Friday at St.

Joseph MercyOakland hospital in Pontiac. He was 88 and had lived in the township all his life. For 20 years, starting in 1963, he served as supervisor. "While he was supervisor, he was also director of public safety," his son Ronald said Monday. "I just remember he didn't come home until late at night." He had started out in a very different kind of life.

He was born on a fruit farm on Wing Lake Road, graduated from Baldwin High School in Birmingham and grew up to run the farm. He sold it in the early '50s, and when the township needed a treasurer in 1955, he was appointed to the job, then elected to it. He did it until he was elected supervisor. In the mid-1970s, he was Anne Garrison ness. And when she retired, she set herself on a path of independent study for the ministry and was ordained five years later by the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan.

Rev. Garrison died from complications of pneumonia Feb. 8 at the Wagner Health Pavilion in Ev-anston, 111. She had moved to Ev-anston in 1994 after living most of her life in East Lansing. She was born in Indianapolis, and dropped out of the University of Wisconsin to marry Jesse Gar- Gift of Reading 313222-6802; DEATH NOTICES Phone: 800-926-8237 (option 4) Fax: 586-977-7510 E-mail: dnoticeshotmail.com THERRIEN ORTH Age M.
