T. P. Adopts New System Two Circuits in Operation. The Grand Trunk ItaJlwny system have recently placed in commission on their northern division, two telephone tram despatching circuits ns follows; one circuit between North Junction und Hurlimrton Junction, via Allandale, a distance of 1 nilles, and another circuit between Allandale and Nlplsslnir Junction, a distance of liia miles. Train desputch-rs on each of these circuits are located at Allan-dale.

tin the circuit between North Pajk-dale Junction and linrllnitton Junction there are twenty-one way stations, and on the circuit between Allandale and NiplssliiK Junction, twenty way stations- These circuits are constructed of No. 9 nature hard drawn copper wire transposed at intervals of every half mile through the open country, and as much more frequent aa is necessary in the vicinity of hiKh yolt-aire power lines, In order to avoid Inductive Influences ami to render the telephone circuits absolutely quiet. The station equipment is of the latest and most perfect type on the market and consists of a arm transmitter and head band receiver for each wav station, thus.Klvinjr the operator the free use of his head, hands nnd bodv while tisinir the telephone. The apparatus is swung to one side out ot his wav while not In use. The train despatching office is equipped with a selector svsteni for calling offices and the duration of the ring in each -way station Is controlled by the desptacher.

who plalnlv hears the ring through his receiver. Any, office on the line can be signalled within eight seconds, and ns the signal bell In each office consists of a four-inch gong, there is little doubt but what the operator will hear his call even though outs-ldo the office and ut a distance from It The donpateher has absolute control of the circuits and way sattions must obtain his word for even- move. The telephone is considered as being superior to the telegraph ns a medium of despatching trains, 'both as a factor of salety and a saving of time. telephone inch station and numeral Is first pronounced and then spelled out letter by letter, by the despatcher for verlllcation when an order is Issued, nnd repeated In like manner by the receiving operator, while by telegraph stations and numerals can only be spelled out In Mor.se characters. I Miring the past three years the telephone bus made rapid strides on Trunk Line railways In the United Stales and Canada for train despatching purposes, find today over thirty thousand miles of railway Is being so despatched.

While the expenses for constructing and equipping telephone circuits gri atly exceeds that of constructing telegraph lines, the railways have obtained so much better results with the telephone that they feel Justified In spending the money. We understand that It is the Intention of the Grand Trunk railway system to extend the use the telephone over Its more important lines in the near future. The new pestem has met with the favor of the and operators, tlu transmission being so cxicllei.t that the work Is transacted In fully fifty per cent, less time and in a more personal and satlsifaotory manner, than possible with the telegraph.
