Married The sleeper hit of the new season just may be ABC's Married People, a warm-hearted comedy about three generations of couples who live in separate apartments in a New York brownstone. Since its debut last month, Married People (Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. on KVUE-TV, Channel 24 Cable 3) has escaped the Nielsen basement where the majority of new series have ended up.

Last week it was the third most popular newcomer behind America's Funniest People and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air with a healthy ranking of 37th out of 95 programs. Of the three couples on Married People, the most interesting is Elizabeth and Russell, a thirty-something yuppie duo expecting their first child. Elizabeth, played by Bess Armstrong, is a successful attorney who's on the fast track to a partnership in her firm. Russell, played by Jay Thomas, is a successful free-lance writer who works at home. Armstrong is a television veteran who always has glowing reviews but has never found a series that grabbed an audience.

Her most recent flop was AW Is Forgiven, an excellent comedy she made four years ago with Carol Kane in which she played a soap opera writer. The show drew rave reviews but was quickly dumped by NBC after a brief in the spring of 1986. "When it went off the air as abruptly as it did, I was a little bit gun-shy," Armstrong said in Los Angeles recently. "This is my first (series) project since then." Armstrong has had better luck in feature films, including Alan Aide's Four Seasons, Tom Selleck's High Road to China and Tom Hanks' Nothing in Common. But she's happy to be back on television and even happier to be playing a pregnant woman.

"I don't have to worry about eating bagels on the set, and costuming is easy," she said. "But really, there's a lot to be done dramatically with a pregnancy. The tension pregnancy can put on a marriage is something worth exploring. A very big part of marriage, especially for people in their 30s, is having Movies Evening 7:00 32 8 KBVO Tha Couch Trip (1988) Dan Ayk-royd, Walter Matthau. Diane Holloway children." Thomas should be a familiar face to viewers, too, and if you've lived in Southern California recently, he should be a familiar voice as well. From 5 until 9 a.m., he's the morning drive DJ for KPWR-FM in Los Angeles. "I'm using the same jokes I used 20 years ago in other cities," Thomas said. "We're not talking about the smartest group of listeners out here." When producers Robert, Sternin and Prudence Fraser cast Thomas in Married People, they had no idea he was also a radio star. "That's how popular my show is," the actor quipped.

But most people will recognize Thomas from his recurring role as Carla's hockey-playing husband Eddie LeBec on Cheers. The character was elminiated last season when poor Eddie was squashed by an ice-scraping machine, bringing an ignominous end to Thomas's career on the No. 1 television show. "When you're dead, it's hard to go on," he joked. "But I don't think they made that decision the first day they saw me acting.

(Producer-director Jim) Burrows explained to me that he wanted Carla to be in more caustic situations. He laughed so hard when he was telling me about it (Eddie's death) that he forgot he was firing me." Thomas also had a plum guest-starring role on Murphy Brown last season, as obnoxious talk-show host Jerry Gold. There have been rumors, which Thomas will neither confirm nor deny, that Murphy will fall in love with Jerry Gold this season. He did say his involvement with Married People would not prevent him from returning to Murphy Brown. On Married People, Thomas's character is constantly needled for his liberated ways by Nick (Ray Aranha), the owner of the building age in the summer of 1959 Hawaii.

Speaking of births and sweeps, Channel 36 anchor Tonia Cooke and her husband, Capt, Ron Graves, are expecting their first child in May, which also happens to be a ratings period for local stations. "We didn't plan it that way, but my boss (general manager Jane Wallace) sure likes the idea," Cooke said. "That's the first thing she said ratings period." Will viewers tune in in sufficient numbers to lift the perennial third-place KXAN-TV newscast? Will Channel 36 send cameras to the birthing? Will Cooke be happy or upset about the circus surrounding her pregnancy? "It should be very interesting," she said.

Cooke told her colleagues the news last Tuesday. She says she realizes this is going to be a very public pregnancy and suspects a news crew will indeed show up at the hospital in May. At this point, Cooke plans to work straight through but has no idea how long she will take off after the baby is born. A native Austinite, Cooke, 33, has anchored Channel 36's newscasts since 1984 and worked at the station since 1980. She and Graves were married in March 1989.

We've wanted to do this show for a long time a three-generational household with the older couple black. CBS was pushing it to be edgier. ABC wanted it to be warmer, and that's what it is." The two producers have been married almost 10 years and say their comedy series has a definite message about marriage. "That it's good," Fraser said.

"You have to work at it, but it's certainly one of the most rewarding things in life." Elizabeth and Russell will probably deliver their baby during a sweeps period, either November or February. Both are naive teen-agers from Indiana who are alternately thrilled by and terrified of their new life in the big city. The youngsters are the weak link in the cast, but the producers are so high on them they're not likely to change. Sternin and Fraser developed the short-lived, heavily criticized CBS sitcom Live-In for Young, who played a teen-ager in perpetual lust for the family's pretty maid.
