C9 Austin American-Statesman Sunday, March 6, 1988 Swiss Oertli sails to her 1st World Cup downhill win Martin wins as Gant comes up empty ASPEN, Colo. (AP) Swiss veteran Brigitte Oertli, assuming leadership by default in the absence of three injured teammates, put together a clean, controlled run Saturday to capture a weather-delayed women's World Cup downhill ski race and move into first place in the overall standings, Oertli, 25, avoided the pitfalls that knocked out two Canadian challengers to keep Switzerland unbeaten in women's downhills this season after seven races. I The versatile Oertli, siiver medalist in both the downhill and combined at the Olympics, was clocked in 1 minute, 22.83 seconds on a course that was icier than on Friday, when the race was stopped because of heavy snow and poor visibility after 11 skiers had run. Three Swiss skiers Maria Wal-liser, Vreni Schneider and Beatrice Gafner suffered knee injuries when they crashed Friday, and all are out for the season. It was Oertli's first downhill triumph in seven seasons of World Cup racing.

On Jan. 18 she earned her first World Cup victory, in a slalom, thus ending years of frustrating second-place finishes. She has been runner-up 11 times. West Germany's Regine Moe-senlechner was second in 1:23.06. Auto racing TV: NASCAR stock car race, ESPN (Cable 43), 11 a.m.

Neuer, making his first appearance in the televised championship round, started with a strike and a spare, but left a seven-pin in the third frame and failed to convert it. Aulby kept expanding the one-pin lead and went on to earn $27,000 for his 14th PBA Tour victory.

"I didn't want to count on that (Neuer's nervousness). I was able to put pressure on him when he missed the spare," Aulby said. Mark Martin inherited the lead when Harry Gant ran out of gas six laps from the end, and raced off to an easy victory Saturday in a 200-mile Grand National stock car race. Martin, from Batesville, was the beneficiary of a lot of racing luck in the 197-lap race at North Carolina Motor Speedway. Pole-winner Dale Earnhardt dominated the early part of the race, then battled side-by-side with Morgan Shepherd at the front of the 39-car field before both cars ran into problems. Earnhardt finally fended off Shepherd and had his Chevrolet solidly in front when he suddenly slowed on lap 148 and drove to the Sockadillos sock The Austin Sockadillos opened the Southwest Indoor Soccer League playoffs with a 9-3 victory over the Albuquerque Gunners Saturday at Tatu's Indoor Soccer Place. The best-of-three semifinal series now shifts to Albuquerque, N.M., where the teams square off next Saturday.
