In 1952, he started the Jewish Book Fair, an idea that was copied across the country. "The one here is still the biggest and the best attended," his son Edward said Thursday. At the center, Mr. Shaw also founded an English as a Second Language program to help Russian immigrants learn American ways, recruiting volunteer teachers from all over the Detroit area. He started the Institute for Retired Professionals, a discussion and activity group for seniors, and the Readers Theater, presenting dramatic readings of literature.

"He was active his whole life long in the modernization of the Hebrew alphabet," his son said. Although he made little headway, he never gave up his quest. "He had no hobbies, and he didn't play," his son said. "He was Mr. Shaw was born in Detroit, grew up in the city and graduated from Northern High School.

At Wayne State University, he earned a bachelor's degree, then a master's in educational administration. Degrees in hand, he got a job teaching in the Detroit public schools. At the same time, he was executive director of the Fresh Air Society Summer Camp, running it during school vacations. Then came World War II, and he joined the Navy. He served on ships making the Mermansk Run, the hazardous duty that got vital supplies to the Soviet Union through the port of Mermansk, above the Arctic Circle.

At war's end, he became assistant director of the Jewish Welfare Federation and returned to his job at the Fresh Air camp. He was responsible for buying several hundred acres in Ortonville for the camp. In 1952, he left for the center, but continued his camp work for four more years. Besides his son, survivors clude two other sons, Nolan and Michael; two grandchildren; a great-grandson, and two brothers. The funeral will be at 10 a.m.

founder of Hydro-Craft, died after short illness af his home in Henderson, Nevada on January 25, 2004. Born in Detroit 1930, Bill served in the Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. If was in the force that he developed his life long love of hydraulics. Bill founded Hydro Inc. In 1958 in a small shop in Detroit.

The business grew over the years, and moved to Royal Oak, and many years later to its present location in Rochester Hills. Bill was constantly developing new products and was the holder of many patents. The business was a family affair, with Biff working closely beside his wife and chiidren. In 1993, Hydro-Craff Nevada opened a new state-of-the-art facility Henderson, and Bill moved to Nevada with his family, to manage this new venture. Bill is survived by wife, Norma and son, Rocky, daughter-in-law, Jeanne, and grandchildren, Michelle and Billy.

He is buried at Palm Mortuary in Las Vegas..
