KBVO is one of the top 10 independent stations in the country. By Diane Holloway American-Statesman Staff Television in Austin was pretty basic in 1980.

In fact, it was as simple as one, two, three, four. Three network affiliates and one public-broadcasting station, all locally owned, were practically the only games in town. The 12-channel cable lineup provided by Capital Cable included WTBS, CNN, HBO, an independent station in Fort Worth and one public-access channel. In 1989, Austin television is sophisticated and diverse. To put it mildly, we have more stations than we can shake a remote-control device at.

A new independent station, KBVO-TV Channel 42 (Cable 5) came to town in 1983; a second PBS sta tion, KLRU-TOO (Cable 31), came along in 1987; and the cable lineup, provided by Austin Cable Vision since 1981, exploded to 54 channels, including eight public-access channels.
