16 Austin American-Statesman Sunday, May 28, 1989 Radio New Christian-information station does the talking to reach will be similar." The station is targeted to 30- to 55-year-olds who are educated and have solid, stable incomes, he said. "We want to make advertising available to people who haven't been able to afford it, the mom-and-pop operations," he said. "If we can produce for people, and provide the type of programming they want, we can be successful. If all our time is sold, we're covered." KELG-AM (1440) has added Spanish Information Service news and Spanish-language Dallas Cowboy broadcasts to its Hispanic-music format. The Spanish Information Service is the largest daily Spanish-language news and information network in the United States, and is part of the Texas State Network.

The programming originates from Dallas. niinAPR As my Daddy used to say, "Enough is too much." But of course every aphorism has its equal and opposite proverb, in this case "Every little bit helps." That's right, another radio station is coming to Austin. This certainly can't be welcome news to competing broadcasters, but the station is offering talk-radio alternatives for Austin listeners. KFIT-AM (1060) is scheduled to sign on in mid-June with a Christianinformation format. The programming will be just about all talk, with about half Christian and half secular, said operations manager Tom Minnick.

"We're approaching it with a completely different format," Minnick said. "We're not formatting the station as programmers ourselves. We've made time available, and we have sold the time to churches or individuals who are interested in producing programs. There are secular producers wanting to produce just about anything, and we specifically targeted the Christian community because there's a need there. A lot of people and churches want to buy time and there's just been none available.

We think it's a new concept." Of course, it's an old concept as well, Minnick said. Most radio sta- Madalyn Murray O'Hair who defected from the atheist fold to become a Christian, will produce an afternoon call-in talk show from Dallas, where listeners will be able to participate via an 800 number. Woman to Woman will be the only talk show in Austin dedicated soley to women's issues, Minnick said. Mark Weaver, Adrian van Zelfden and Evelyn Davison also are producing programs. The station is owned by Fred Lundgren, an Austin broadcaster, Minnick said.

KFIT is licensed to Lockhart, but the studios are at U.S. 183 and MoPac Boulevard, and the transmitter is in Northeast Austin near U.S. 183 and U.S. 290. In Lockhart, the station operated at 250 watts, but it has been upgraded to 2,000 watts for the move to Austin and should be audible in Travis, Bastrop, Hays and Caldwell counties, as well as parts of Williamson, Lee, Comal and Burnet counties.

KFIT will broadcast in daytime hours only. The recycled concept of selling time to independents will provide a competitive edge in Austin's tight market, Minnick said. "We won't be competing with KLBJ-AM (590), really," he said, "but the type of people we're trying BEST BUY PRICE JN HAMBURGERS-. Vi PRICE 1 or 2 burgers at all participating John Herndon tions started this way, selling time to individual producers who were responsible for their own funding, whether from advertising or other sources. Most of the time is filled, Minnick said, although some time slots are available.

Individuals or groups interested in producing a program can find out more by calling 794-8400. An interesting array of talk shows is scheduled. A morning news magazine produced by Cary Fitch (founder of that glorious failure The National Radio Network of Texas), will include news, weather, traffic, a local activities calendar and in-depth reporting on Austin issues. Straight Talk with Buddy Hicks, formerly heard on KIXL-AM (970), will air weekdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. (Hicks also is general manager of KFIT.) Marlin Maddux's conservative Point of View will be broadcast afternoons.
