Red lands Dai// Foefs Thurs., April 29,1965-9 Bookkeeper slashes self, bank has forge shortage BLUFFTON, Ind. (UPI) — •There's a $216,752 shortage in! the funds of the Farmers & -Merchants Bank.' t Rose Johnson, the bank's chief bookkeeper for the past 29 years is in the hospital recovering from 17 . gashes inflicted •'above and below her elbows. '•' Police records say that Mrs. Johnson's wounds were inflicted "a week ago Monday in a sui- r cide attempt. The story came out Tuesday in this eastern Indiana town, 25 miles south of Fort Wayne, when bank President Amos Gerber acknowledged that the community of 7,000 had been •buzzing about for a week. Respected Woman Mrs. Johnson was one of the best known and most respected women in town. She and Ger her were regarded as main stays of the bank. Two years ago she and her husband •bought one of Bluffton's biggest homes and filled it with antique furnishings from the items she .had collected as a prominent antique dealer. About a month ago Mrs. Johnson was hospitalized briefly for surgery. Before the operation she told other bank em- ployes she would take care oi "the savings account file" when she returned. But to be obliging, the other :mployes worked on the file so .hat Mrs. Johnson would not be overburdened with work when she returned. When she came jack to work three weeks ago, they told her they couldn't get the accounts to balance. Employes said she told them "give me a tape on it and I'l take care of it." She brought them back, apparently in balance. Become Suspicious But bank officials were suspicious. They notified Joseph McCord, director of the State Department of Financial Institu tions. Bank examiners found thai shortages apparently began at the Farmers & Merchants two years ago. More than half the total shortage vanished within the past four months, bank officials said. On April 19, Gerber told Mrs Johnson of the examiners' find ings. He said she stayed late at the bank that day and lef •shortly after 5 p.m. Two hours later Mrs. John son's 15-year-old son found her in the bedroom of their home It took 100 stitches to close her wounds. The next day Federal Bureau D£ Investigation agents searchac her home. France opens relations v/ith Outer Mongolia i By JOSEPH W. GRIGG United Press International . PARIS (UPI) — An unusual •little news item from Tass in Moscow, later confirmed by the French Foreign Office, announced that France and Outer Mongolia have decided to estab- • lish relations. This might appear to be just a diplomatic curiosity if it were not for the fact that President Charles de Gaulle of France .never makes such moves with;out a specific purpose and with•out careful thought beforehand. It's doubtful if one Frenchman In 10,000 could stand up and ^say with confidence where Outer Mongolia is—let alone why France should have diplomatic Delations with her. What the reference work probably would not mention is that outer Mongolia is one of Moscow's proteges and a major pawn in the power struggle in the Communist world between Russia and Red China. Therefore, the fact that De Gaulle has decided to establish diplomatic relations could be interpreted—and probably correctly—as a friendly gesture towards Moscow. Th timing is significant too.
