Public support for soccer is ex- pected to rapidly grow during the next few years because the United States will host the 1994 World Cup. Fan response is a key factor in the success of any local team as well as the return of professional outdoor soccer to the U.S.

National organizers know the reasons for the demise of the former North American Soccer League and are working to prevent a repeat. One reason the only major outdoor United States soccer, league ever attempted failed was the absence of U.S. stars. Kyle Rote, Jr. comes to mind, but no others.

International stars like Pele usually took the spotlight. But numbers and quality oftt youth players has grown tremendously over the years and that" makes for a more knowledgeable fan base and higher caliber player skill. This and the formation of-outdoor leagues should help the sport become established along with pro baseball, basketball football. Each Southwest Outdoor Soccer League team must have at least -two players over the age of 30, three youth players and 10 with U.S. citizenship on the roster and' five U.S.
