Remember the name Doan and take no other. Middlebury Decides to Bond. A special meeting of school district Xo. 4 took place in Middlebury last Friday evening. The meeting was called to order by Judge John K.

Weeks, who was later elected moderator, and Joseph M. Burke wag elected clerk. Attorney Ira H. Laflure, chairman of the prudential school committee, presented the following resolution, which was pawl in connection with the erection of the new high school building: "Resolved, That the prudential committee are hereby authorized and instructed, in exercise of the power granted bv the act' of the general assembly of the state of Vermont, entitled, 'An aec authorizing school district Xo. 4 in Middlebury to issue and sell bonds of the district in the principal sum of of each, dated January 1, lf12, payable 25 years from that date, with interest at the rate of four per cent, per annum, the coupons to be payable on January 1 and July 1.

ABOUT THE STATE Happenings of Interest From Dif- ferent Sections. i There are four cases of mild smallpox in Hyde Park, in consequence of which schools anil public places are closed for a time and there has been general vaccination. At the annual commemoration day' ex-eiciseg of Johns Hopkins university on Thursday at Baltimore, the degree of doctor of laws was bestowed upon Horatio K.

Smith of Brattleboro. Talmadge W. Lewis, an inmate of the Soldiers' home at Bennington for nearly 10 years, died Thursday morning of heart failure. He was a native of Orwell and served in Company 14th Vermont, during the Civil war. Alexander Zakansky, a Polander, whose funeral was held in West Rutland Thursday, died as the result of an accident in the sand pit at Center Rutland, being crushed to death by a huge stone.

The boulder became loosened from one of the high bank and rolling down, caught the Polander and crushed him against a wagon. The high wind Wednesday night created havoc at the Shaw-Idge poultry farm at Manchester, when a hen house over feet in length, containing over 200 White Leghorns, was demolished. The hens not killed outright were more or less frozen. They were selected stock, set apart for breeding purposes and the loss is about $200. Ethan Tatro, the Richford boy who wag seriously injured while coasting a few weeks ago, and who was taken to the Royal Victoria hospital, Montreal, where he was operated by lifting a large piece of the skull which pressed on the brain, has so far recovered that he has returned to his home in that town His recovery is considered remarkable.

Walter IT. Castle of Guilford was awarded $180.64 in Brattleboro muni cipal court for damages sustained when his milk wagon and contents were tipped down an embankment because forced to turn out on account of a hole in the approach to the bridge between (Juilford Center and Hnlifax on December 27. Ope of his pair of horse, had to be killed. The case will probably be tak en to county court on appeal. During the worst storm of the win ter in Burlington, Wednesday, nearly sit inches of snow falling during the dav and sleet beginning to fall shortlv before 10 o'clock at night, the street car service was demoralized, not a car being operated in the evening and the traction company had difficulty in keep ing the tracks clear.

Hie municipal lighting plant was practically out of commission for three days ana the city was in almost total darkness except for a few circuits. P. J. Audette has negotiated the sle of the Burton farms at West Swanton to M. E.

of MarH'ville, for tJI.000, making one of the larirest real estate transactions that has tsken place there in recent years. The sale includes 000 acres of land with four houses and IS farm buildings, including the "Wigwam," a summer cottage on Hog Island point. Acting under the authority conferred by the last legislature in establishing a public bureau. Secretary of State Guy W. Bailey several months ago issued a book setting forth the agricultural opportunities of Vermont and containing notices of many farms offered for sale. advertisements describing this book were published in the 10 states of Massachusetts. Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin.

Kansas and Indiana, also the province of Quebec. As a result of this advertising, which cost a little less than $300, replies have been received from every state in the union, from British Columbia. Mexico, the Panama canal zone and France. l'p to last week 201 replies bad been received from Vermont and 1,314 from outside the state. A large mailing list bus been secured and in addition to the send ing out of the farm book, the book ou apple culture issued by the state department of agriculture has been distributed.

The books have been followed by letters to those receiving them and also to persons advertising in the farm book, in order to obtain a knowledge of the results.
