COMEDY! small role, and it was fun to watch him and Monroe as a young couple in love. Costello looked every inch the professional as he donned disguises and used various accents, but he could have used yet another layer of sinister.

His best moments were in his first appearance as the crazy old guy carrying a rug, and at the end, when he reveals his craziness. Hamilton's portrayal of a smalltime crook was never more than surface bluster. He and White both seemed to lack real sleaziness. Di rector Sweet was probably trying to prevent overacting, but this way, they never came across as threatening enough. Young Kati Eaves did good work as Gloria and could be better if she would speak more authoritatively.

Jim Carroccio's set is successful in that it is an unobtrusive backdrop to the story. It does seem a little crowded at times, but that may be unavoidable in this space. You have to be patient, but Wait Until Dark does finally catch up with you when the lights are out. brought home a doll, which unbeknownst to him, contains a quantity of heroin. A cutthroat criminal named Roat (Michael Costello) is after the stuff.

He hires two con men (Mike Hamilton and Lem White) and hatches an elaborate plot to fool Susy, but they don't count on her sharp perceptions and ingenuity. Monroe is to be commended for a believable rendering of blindness, and a good job all around. She really knows how to put a quaver in her voice. Chelakis did a lot with his What did help was that actors Michael Costello and Sally Monroe were able to round out their portrayals of the two main characters, giving them well-defined personalities and making the last third of the play a chilling dance of hunter and prey. For those who never saw the Broadway hit or the 1967 film version of Frederick Knott's play, Susy Hendrix (Sally Monroe) is a young blind woman whose husband Sam (Gino Chelakis) is away on a business trip.

On his last trip, Sam By Diana Claitor Special to the American-Statesman Wait Until Dark is an old war horse of a thriller, but it still gives you a pretty good run for your money. The latest version of this murderous tale is a St. Edward's production directed by Nick Sweet. At first, this show was more tedious than murderous it screamed "student production." The arena setting made it harder to suspend disbelief; but in the end, it did get to you. The director took advantage of the tension of the second act, and we all ended up like the playwright intended: anxious and on the edges of our seats.

Some cast members did seem to be in a little over their heads, but then some audience members seemed to have nothing in their heads. One can only wonder why supposed adults find it amusing to make smart remarks to the actors and chatter during quiet moments. That's the kind of thing you do in a melodrama; this was a regular play, and one in which the actors worked hard to create an atmosphere of fear. Court jesters don't help much.
