Thursday, May 2, 1985 Austin American-Statesman B5, Lucas claims pressure to retract slayings on radio show! Dl7 TUfiXrA fftV rnrs.A iam.I 1 1 It in i 11. 11 1 II Mike Cox By taped Lucas' remarks Monday spliced from an earlier interview "I have killed the people I said I ed his conservation with Lucas and reference to McLennan County in Georgetown. "It's our position that no matter whether Henry Lucas says he did the murders or didn't, he can't be in two places at once," Feazell said. Meanwhile, Williamson County Sheriff Jim Boutwell said Wednesday he spent about half an hour with Lucas in Waco Tuesday afternoon. Boutwell said he was able to talk with Lucas for only a few minutes before he was asked to leave the cell until Lucas' attorney could arrive.

The sheriff said he tape-record authorities. "I have to do like they want me to do. I have been telling you this, along, but for some reason I can't seem to get through." Boutwell said he had had little time to talk with Lucas privately-before Cox appeared at the jail, and that after Cox arrived, Lucas': attitude seemed to change. Schroeder, who was hospitalized briefly last weekend for treatment of nervous exhaustion, was dls-. charged from the hospital Sunday, Boutwell said.

a later conversation with Cox. "When he found out I had made a recording, he asked me to destroy it, and I said I would not," Boutwell said of Cox. Boutwell also said he has a handwritten four-page letter ffom Lucas to Schroeder with a note in it to him. Boutwell made public excerpts from the letter. One excerpt said, "No matter what you hear here don't let anyone tell you what your heart knows is right because I cannot stop these people," an apparent while visiting Lucas in his McLennan County jail cell, where he is being held during a grand jury investigation of two confessions Lucas made to slayings in the county.

The radio minister said he was accompanied by his wife and by Clemmie Schroeder, a Catholic lay worker who is Lucas' confidante and Bible teacher from Goerge-town. Larsen said he taped Lucas' short statement that he had killed as many people as he had earlier claimed before Lucas' court appointed attorney, Guy Cox, joined them Larsen said he then began taping a longer interview, but that Cox asked him to stop the interview because he felt Lucas was incriminating himself. Larsen said Cox asked him to erase the tape, which he said he did. But Larsen said he managed to keep Lucas' initial statement on the tape. Lucas' statement said: American-Statesman Staff WACO Henry Lee Lucas said in a taped interview broadcast nationally Wednesday by radio evangelist Bob Larsen that he was compelled by McLennan County authorities to say he had never killed anyone but his mother.

"I have killed the people I said I killed," Lucas said in the interview, which was recorded by the Denver minister, a former rock star whose daily talk show is distributed by satellite throughout the ynited States and Canada. 'Everytime I say I didn't kill the people, it only helps these people," hC said referring to McLennan County District Attorney Vic and his staff. "In order for me fo stay here, I have to do what I'm fbra," Lucas said. The interview was broadcast on Waco Radio station KBBW a short firjje after 3 p.m. Wednesday.

IlXarsen told his audience he killed. They may have somewhere along the line found other dates, but they were supposed to have went back and checked on each case to make sure there was no conflict. They also know these work records are phony work records. They know that the people that I've taken back to the crime (scenes) did not help me to get back to those crimes. "Every time I say I didn't kill the people, it only helps these people in McLennan County).

In order for me to stay here, I have to do what I'm told, but I told the people in Georgetown the truth, and they know it's the truth. "It's only what they want to hear, and that's all. It's not what the actual truth is. The truth is I kflled around 360 people." McLennan County District Attorney Vic Feazell issued a written statement after the broadcast saying that Lucas had told him that most of the statements aired were OPEN DAILY 10 A.M.-9 P.M.
