Nimoy directs with an eye for color and detail, and even if the characters populate a disappointing film, at least they have nice wardrobes.

Surely Hello Again has a higher white-bread count than Leonard Nimoy's new film, his first comedy, but Hello Again also has Judith Ivey. Three Men and a Baby has nothing so quirky and amusing as Ivey, but it does have a baby (a pair of them, actually, since twins were used for the title infant), and in that baby is one of the movie's few recommendations. It seems like only yesterday that the original French version of this story played at the Varsity. Titled Three Men and a Cradle, the subtitled film was a sitcom about three swinging bachelors who find a baby at the doorstep of their apartment. In trying to care for the infant, whose origins are unknown, the men go through the expected trials of feeding, diapering, washing and other duties that rob time normally spent working or womanizing.

Just as predictably, the men are saddened when, just as they're about to master this child-rearing business, a penitent mother shows up to claim her child. The Disney folks, seeing that Three Men and a Cradle performed well on the arthouse circuit, quickly scarfed it up for Americanization. It now comes to us directed by Nimoy, and starring three pretty believable swinging bachelors: Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg and Ted Danson. I I'm not kidding when I say that the incredibly huge and well-decorated Manhattan apartment in which the action is set is the most remarkable thing about this film. You'd think that the idea of three 35-ish bachelors living together is a stretch of the imagination until you see their apartment.

To get this kind of square footage, I'd consider sharing the place with Sas-quatch and Dr. Mengele. But apart from some priceless moments early on (this may be the first movie that gives us a close shot of a terribly soiled diaper) Three Men and a Baby is just Three and a Cradle all over again, as utterly predictable and utterly unremarkable as ever. Given the pre- mise, which really could be a comic gold mine, you're tempted to think I the writers tried to make the mate-i rial dull. How could this miss?
