F33 Austin American-Statesman Saturday, June 25, 1988 Magnetic-storm warning issued Largest solar flare in 4 years expected to disrupt transmissions LOS ANGELES (AP) The largest solar flare in four years exploded from the sun Friday, spurring warnings that a major magnetic storm probably will disrupt global communications and satellite operations on Monday. "I've got a major storm warning out for Monday," and it likely will ebb into a minor magnetic storm Tuesday, said Chris Balch, duty forecaster at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Space Environment Laboratory in Boulder, Colo, The flare an explosive release of hot gas, electrically charged particles and X-rays poses no direct threat to life. But the magnetic storm could disrupt long-distance phone calls and electric power transmission. Proton radiation associated with the solar flare should reach orbiting spacecraft today, said Gary Heckman, the agency's chief of space environment services. While officials can't forecast the magnetic storm with certainty, Balch said, there is a "really high" probability it will start Monday as hot gases and charged particles emitted by the flare hit Earth's magnetic field.

Communications likely to be disrupted are short-wave, including international broadcasts, ship-to-shore communications, polar communications and contact between airliners and ground controllers, Heckman said. An agency statement said long-distance phone calls also might be affected. Dale Gary, a solar astronomer at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, said the flare was the biggest since April 1984. He said it came from a group of about 20 sunspots, some up to three times larger than Earth. Gary said solar flares occur when "the magnetic configuration of sunspots gets complicated and twisted, then they release stored energy." Electrically charged particles and gases from the sun flow tow ard Earth's poles along magnetic field lines to cause the northern and southern lights, or auroras.

Walrus hunters rescued after 3 weeks adrift ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -Seven walrus hunters including a 13-year-old boy and a teacher from New Jersey are safe after three weeks adrift in the ice-clogged Bering Sea. Three were flown to Anchorage hospitals Friday while the others awaited flights back to their St. Lawrence Island home. The hunters were rescued by helicopter late Thursday. The intensive search included flights authorized by the Soviet Union inside its 12-mile territorial limit, a first, according to U.S.

officials. But the missing hunters were found on a southeastern shore of St. Lawrence Island at the opposite end from their home port of Gam-bell on the island's northwestern tip and away from the Soviet territorial waters. Six of the seven hunters were members of the Slwooko family. The other was Andy Haviland, a schoolteacher formerly of New Jersey.

"Everyone is just all over the village, hugging and kissing and praising God," Haviland's mother, Deborah, told KNOM radio of Nome. She flew to Gambell from her home in Summit, N.J., after her son was reported missing. Haviland, 30, was reported in stable condition at Providence Hospital, suffering from malnutrition and dehydration. Haviland was the only non-native in the group and he credited the Eskimos' finely honed knowledge of nature for their survival. Harold Slwooko, 27, and 30-year-old Michael Slwooko were reported in stable condition.

The group of seven, in two small skiffs, were part of a larger hunting party that left Gambell for what was supposed to be a one-day hunt. The search effort included the Coast Guard, Alaska State Troopers, the Alaska National Guard and several Soviet ships.
