2-C OJlit latly Keuia Sunday Morning, November 24,1985 COLL fCe FOOTBALL Jackson leads Sooners into Orange Bowl SACKED NORMAN, Okla. (AP) Keith Jackson, a 241-pound tight end, rambled 88 yards for a touchdown on his first carry of the season Saturday, triggering fifth-ranked Oklahoma to a surprisingly easy 27-7 victory over No. 2 Nebraska and a berth in the Orange Bowl against Penn State. Jackson, a sophomore and Oklahoma's leading receiver, turned the corner and tightroped his way down the right sideline to give Oklahoma a 7-0 lead with just 3:39 gone in the game. Freshman quarterback Jamelle Holieway darted 43 yards for another touchdown 5Vfe minutes later, three plays after a 38-yard pass from Holieway to Jackson Oklahoma's only completion of the game put the ball at the Nebraska 46.

The Sooners' two touchdown strikes covered 91 and 90 yards and Oklahoma's explosive Wishbone attack churned out 203 yards on the ground in the first quarter and 423 in the game against a Nebraska team that had allowed only 91 rushing yards a game. Another end-around by Jackson covered 29 yards late in the second period and set up Tim Lashar's 36-yard field goal with 1:18 left in the first half. Lashar added a 34- yard field goal early in the third period and Jackson barreled 19 yards after faking a pass he carried three times for 136 yards during a 75-yard drive that culminated in a 17-yard scoring run by Holieway. It was Nebraska's worst setback since a 38-7 loss to Oklahoma in 1977. The 17-0 halftime score marked Nebraska's largest midway deficit since a 47-0 loss to Oklahoma in the 1968 finale.

The Cornhuskers prevented what would have been their first shutout in 147 games when defensive tackle Chris Spachman plucked an Oklahoma fumble out of the air and lumbered 76 yards for a touchdown with 26 seconds left in the game. Nebraska finished the 1985 regu- lar season with a 9-2 record and a 6-1 Big Eight mark. Oklahoma is 8-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play, with a game against Oklahoma State next week and a nonconference windup against Southern Methodist on Dec. 7. However, Stan Marks, president-elect of the Orange Bowl, said Oklahoma was the choice as Penn State's Jan.

The Orange Bowl would have 1 had a certain national championship Shootout had Nebraska defeated Oklahoma. 7 While the Sooners clinched at least a share of their 28th Big Eight crown in the last 40 years, Nebraska had to settle for a Fiesta Bowl date against Michigan.

Iowa 31 Minnesota 9 IOWA CITY, Iowa CAP) Chuck Long threw for one 1 touchdown, set up another and became the first Big Ten ference football player to pass for more than 10,000 yards in his ca" reer as third-ranked Iowa defeated Minnesota 31-9 Saturday to earn a berth in the Rose Bowl. Iowa captured its first outright Big Ten championship in 27 years and gained its second Rose Bowl appearance in five years and fourth overall. The Hawkeyes are 10-1 for the season, a school record for victories, and finished 7-1 in the Big Ten. Minnesota 4-4 in the conference and 6-5 overall. Long, his final game at Kinnick Stadium, raised his career passing total to 10,052 yards, breaking the Big Ten record of 9,946 by Pur: due's Mark Herrmann during 1977-80.

The Iowa senior fired a 4-yard touchdown pass to tight end Mike Flagg late in the second quarter to give Iowa a 17-3 halftime lead and teamed up with Bill Happel on a 24-yard play to set up Kevin Harmon's 11-yard TD run in the third period. Michigan 27 OhioSt. 17 ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) Michigan quarterback Jim baugh threw three touchdown passes and set two school records Saturday to lead the sixth-ranked Wolverines to a 27-17 Big Ten football victory over arch-rival Ohio State. Michigan finished the season with a 9-1-1 record, 6-1-1 in the Big Ten Conference.

The I2th-ranked Buckeyes wound up 8-3 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten. Ohio State announced immediately after the game it would meet Brigham Young in the Citrus Bowl at Orlando, on Dec. 28. Harbaugh, a 6-foot-3, 204-pound junior, completed 16 of 19 passes for 230 yards. That gave him 1,913 passing yards for the season, surpassing the 1,735 by Steve Smith in 1982.

His three TD tosses gave him 18 for the season, breaking the record of 17 by Rick Leach in 1978. Harbaugh threw a 4-yard strike to fullback Gerald White at 12:32 of the second quarter that pulled the Wolverines into a 10-10 tie which stood through halftime. Harbaugh found tight end Eric Kattus alone in the end zone for a 5-yard TD pass at 12:04 of the third quarter and hooked up with freshman flanker John Kolesar for a 77-yard bomb that sealed the victory at 5:41 of the fourth quarter. Senior Pat Moons, who handled all of Michigan's place-kicking chores after Rick Sutkiewicz and Mike Gillette were suspended the day before the game, had a 34- yard field goal in the first quarter for the Wolverines. All-American tailback Keith Byars of Ohio State, who played the entire game, scored on a 2- yard run in the second quarter and quarterback Jim Karsatos fired a 36-yard, fourth-down TD strike to Chris Carter at 4:50 of the fourth quarter.

Rich Spangler's 48-yard field goal in the second quarter accounted for the rest of the Buckeyes' points. Tennessee 42 Kentucky 0 LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) Daryl Dickey passed for three touchdowns and ran for one as No. 16 Tennessee found its offensive punch in the second half, shut out Kentucky 42-0 in a Southeastern Conference college football game and continue its trek to the Sugar Bowl. The victory put Tennessee's record at 7-1-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

The Volunteers need a victory over Vanderbilt next week to seal their first conference championship since 1969 and a berth in the Sugar Bowl. Kentucky ended its season at 5-6 overall and 1-5 in the SEC. After managing only 70 yards total offense and two field goals in the first half, Dickey guided Tennessee to touchdowns on its first three possessions of the second half. Dickey, after narrowly avoiding a sack, hit wide receiver Tim McGee from 37 yards out and Tennessee completed a two-point conversion to take a 14-0 lead with 3:29 into the third quarter. The senior quarterback hit McGee again, this time with a 12-yard scoring strike, and fired an 18-yard touchdown pass to Joey Clinkscales in the third quarter to extend the Volunteers' lead to 28-0.

Dickey capped an 80-yard, 11- play scoring drive in the fourth quarter with a 1-yard run. An interception of a pass from Kentucky backup quarterback Kevin Dooley on the Wildcats' 6-yard line set up Tennessee's final score, a 7-yard run by running back Pete Panuska with 41 seconds left. AP Laserphotu TCU quarterback David Rascoe (17) is sacked by Texas linebacker Johnny Holland in the first quarter Saturday afternoon in Fort Worth. The Horned Frogs lost four yards on the play and the game LSU edges Irish 10-7; Trojans upset UCLA Brigham Young 38 Utah 28 PROVO, Utah (AP) Fullback Lakei Heimuli rambled for three touchdowns, including an 83-yard burst up the middle in the fourth quarter to preserve BYU's 38-28 victory Saturday and send the llth-ranked Cougars into the Florida Citrus Bowl Dec. 28 in Orlando against No.12 Ohio State.

BYU, 10-2 overall and 6-1 in the conference, has played Ohio State only once before, losing 47-17 in the 1982 Holiday Bowl in San Diego. Before Saturday's game, BYU figured to meet either Ohio State or Auburn. "Well, we played them before," Edwards said of Ohio State. "And like I said earlier, it's a lot like being hung or shot. We're glad to be going to a bowl game." Hard-luck Utah, which finished its season 8-4 and 5-3, had two touchdowns called back by penalties, and midway through the fourth quarter, while driving toward a possible go-ahead touchdown, fell victim to an interception.

Heimuli rushed for 164 yards as the Cougars, the nation's leading passing team, rolled up 307 yards on the ground and 270 yards through the air before 65,473 fans. SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) Jeff Wickersham completed a record 31 passes against Notre Dame and Garry James blasted off tackle for a'touchdown with 3:26 to play Saturday to lead nth- ranked Louisiana State to a 10-7 victory over Notre Dame. The Tigers, who had been denied several earlier scoring opportunities, started from their own 48-yard line late in the game with Wickersham completing three passes for 47 yards before James slammed into the end zone from the 2-yard line with winning touchdown. Wickersham's 31 completions, the most ever against a Notre Dame team, came in 42 attempts for 294 yards.

The victory gave the Tigers a 71-1 record and avenged a 30-22 loss to Notre Dame at Baton Rouge last year. LSU is 4-1-1 in the Southeastern Conference and still has a chance to gain a Sugar Bowl bid. Notre Dame dropped to 5-5 for the season, losing at home for the first time this season. It was the 25th loss for the Irish in Coach Gerry Faust's five-year reign, the most losses by any one Irish coach. Faust's contract is not expected to be renewed.

Notre Dame took a 7-0 lead on its first possession as Tim Brown went 18 yards on an end-around play for the score. The Irish nursed that lead until James notched the winning touchdown. Southern Cal 17 UCLA 13 LOS ANGELES (AP) Freshman Rodney Peete scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak with 1:13 remaining Saturday to give the Southern Cal Trojans a dramatic 17-13 victory over eighth-ranked UCLA and put the mistake-plagued Bruins' Pacific- 10 title and Rose Bowl hopes on hold. The Bruins, who could have clinched the Pac-10 championship with a victory, could still win the conference and a berth in the Rose Bowl if Arizona defeats Arizona State in their game Saturday night. The Bruins are 8-2-1 overall and 6-2 in the conference.

A victory or tie by Arizona State would put the Sun Devils into the Rose Bowl against Iowa, which wrapped up the Big Ten championship earlier Saturday with a 31-9 victory over Minnesota. The Trojans' triumph overshadowed an NCAA record by UCLA place-kicker John Lee, who kicked his 78th and 79th field goals during the contest to become the all-time career leader. Former Arizona State kicker Luis Zendejas had held the NCAA record with 78 field goals in his career. Peete's touchdown, coming on fourth down, made the Trojans record 5-5 overall and 4-3 in the Pac-10. They close out their regular season next Saturday against Oregon in Tokyo.

Washington St 21 Washington 20 SEATTLE (AP) Mark Rypien passed for three touchdowns and Rueben Mayes rushed for 167 yards on 29 carries as Washington State ended a disappointing season on a high note Saturday with a 21-20 Pacific-10 Conference football victory over Washington on a bitterly cold day. The favored Huskies scored on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Chris Chandler to Lonzell Hill with 2:25 left, but a two-point conversion pass from Chandler to Hill sailed out of the end zone. Despite the loss, Washington, 6-5, is expected to be invited to the Freedom Bowl in Anaheim, Dec. 30. Washington State, 4-7, beat its cross-state rival for the third time in four years on Rypien's 15-yard touchdown pass to Kitrick Taylor in the fourth quarter, breaking 14-14 tie with 11:19 left in the game.

Stanford 24 California 22 STANFORD, Calif. (AP) John Paye, who passed for two touchdowns and scored on a quarterback sneak early in the game, saved Stanford from potential disaster in the final minutes Saturday with a 34-yard completion, and the Cardinal escaped with a 24-22 victory' over California in the football rivals' 88th Big Game. Hogs get late TD, nip SMU FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) Arkansas quarterback Mark Calcagni was sacked on two straight plays and the Razorbacks, trailing 9-7, faced third- and-23 when Coach Ken Hatfield called time.

"He called us over to the sideline during that timeout and told us the game was ours if we wanted it, then asked us, 'How bad do you want it?" 1 Calcagni said. "Well, we wanted it pretty bad." Calcagni immediately threw to Bobby Joe Edmonds for 48 yards and four plays later scored from the 4 with 3:47 left as the 18th- ranked Razorbacks rallied to beat Southern Methodist 15-9 Saturday. Calcagni said he knew something good was going to happen. "It was just a matter of time. Bobby Joe juked their linebacker and he fell down.

It was just a great call by Coach Hatfield." "We gave the game ball to a player who is typical of our team Mark Calcagni," Hatfield said. "He stayed with us five years and contributed whatever he could. He epitomizes what this team is about." The Razorbacks finished 9-2 and accepted a bid to the Dec. 22 Holiday Bowl. Amazingly, Arkansas completed its Southwest Conference schedule without giving up a rushing touchdown to its eight league opponents.

"That's as remarkable as anything I've ever heard of in college football," Hatfield said. Calcagni, in relief of starter Greg Thomas, guided the Razorbacks to a second-quarter touchdown that made it 7-3. Brandy Brownlee's third field goal put SMU on top 9-7 with 3:25 left in the third quarter. The Razorbacks's winning drive didn't look like it was going anywhere when Ben Hummel dumped Calcagni for losses of 4 and 9 yards. On third down from his 27.

Calcagni dropped back and found Edmonds crossing from left to right for 48 yards to the SMU 25. On second down. Calcagni kept right on the option for 12 yards and a first down on the 9. After Derrick Thomas made 5 yards. Calcagni started right again, faked a pitch to Sammy Van Dyke, kept and scored.

It was Arkansas' first victory over SMU since 1979 and the first time since then that the Razorbacks have won nine regular- season games. SMU is 6-4 with Oklahoma to play on Dec. 7. Arkansas finished 6-2 in the conference and SMU wound up 5-3. Calcagni, in relief of starter Greg Thomas, guided the Razorbacks to a second-quarter touchdown that made it 7-3.

Brandy Brownlee's third field goal put SMU on top 9-7 with 3:25 left in the third quarter. The Mustangs reached midfield in the closing minutes, but David Schell sacked Don King for an 8- yard loss and King overthrew Albert Reese on fourth down.
