Psycho won't appeal to every taste, but those with a memory of the original and an appreciation for the '50s feel of that film may very well find the new movie to be very smart and extremely funny.

Naturally, a taste for suspense and horror is a prerequisite here; like Hitchcock's original, violence is at the center, and the fates that await the various personalities assembled in Charles Edward Po-gue's script are depicted in ways that Hitchcock never would have considered. That's the '80s sensibility for you. What is remarkable about this film, though, is that otherwise it bears more resemblance to films from an earlier era. First-time director Perkins (who also stars, of course, as Norman Bates), has done what Tobe Hooper did earlier this in Invaders from Mars. He has made a movie with the look and texture of a film from 30 years ago, yet with a tone that is affectionate, not campy.

The action begins where the generally disappointing Psycho II left TWENTIETH LIU FOX tents AMKMfH Mim "BIG IK IN LITTLE CHINA" KURT RUSSEU. KIM CATTRAll DENNIS OUN Mux by JOKIi CMPENTEfl in sssocialion witli ALAN HOWARTH falEftalMDEMD taiwftjtePffllNOaai KEITH MBISN off. Norman continues to run the Bates Motel. Mrs. Spool, the woman Norman bashed on the head with a shovel In Psycho II, is missing.

Two visitors stop at the tiny roadside inn. Duane (Jeff Fahey) is a callow young musician who dreams of rock stardom in L.A.; Maureen (Diana Scarwid) is an unhappy young woman who has fled the convent. Duane shows his sleazy stripes early on; more complex is Maureen, and it is her character who introduces most of the film's many surprises. Don't worry: We're giving away none here. Perkins is obviously aware that Psycho retains its popularity today primarily on the basis of its black comedy.

As a result, Psycho III is funny almost from start to finish, and yet remains frightening and suspenseful. As a first-time director, Perkins has done a magnificent Job. We will share one bit of dialogue with you. It's not necessarily the best, but it speaks for the film's brand of humor. Maureen is apologizing for an incident that has left her room in a wreck.

"I'm so sorry about the mess I made in the bathroom," says she. Responds Norman, in all his boyish enthusiasm: "That's OK! I've seen it worse."
