04 WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 1997 SPORTS THE SALINA JOURNAL Pitino / UK expects long list of candidates T BASKETBALL: KENTUCKY REACTION FROM PAGE D1 seasoned." said ESPN college basketball analyst Clark Kellogg, "someone who's been around the Kentucky situation as a player or assistant. If you're not seasoned or experienced, the job could swallow you up because of the tradition, because of the level of success there, because of who you're following." That would make former Wildcats great PITINO Dan Issel another possibility, even though his coaching background was in the NBA with the Denver Nuggets. But really, there will be no shortage of candidates if there's an opening. "There will be so many great names to choose from," said former UK player and broadcaster Jim Master. "A lot of people will want this job." New Jersey Nets coach John Calipari and Portland Trail Blazers coach P.J. Carlesimo might be wooed back to the college game — and Carlesimo almost took the UK job eight years ago. South Carolina's Eddie Fogler knows the Southeastern Conference, not to mention UK athletic director C.M. Newton, whom he succeeded as Vanderbilt coach when Newton left for UK. Some of the hot names from around college basketball who are linked with every notable opening could join the candidate mix, including Utah's Rick Majerus, Iowa State's Tim Floyd, Stanford's Mike Montgomery, Clemson's Rick Barnes and Providence's Pete Gillen. UK could even make a third run at Lute Olson of 1997 NCAA champion Arizona. He was first offered the job that eventually went to Eddie Sutton after Joe B. Hall retired in 1985. In 1989, after Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and then-Los Angeles Lakers coach (and former UK star) Pat Riley immediately said they weren't interested, Olson flirted with UK before staying put. Carlesimo then came much closer to bolting Seton Hall, even coming to UK and interviewing for the job before turning it down. But now Carlesimo is under constant fire with the Trail Blazers, taking the team to the playoffs each of his three seasons but losing in the first round each time. Of Pitino's ex-UK assistants, Smith (who took over Tulsa first in 1991) and Willard (who took over Western Kentucky first in 1990) have the edge over Sendek (who took over Miami University first in 1993) and Donovan (who took over Marshall first in 1994) in experience. "They might be a touch green, and that in no way discounts their coaching ability," said Kellogg of Sendek and Donovan. "There is something to be said with having tenure under your belt before you take a job like Kentucky. For even the most respected coaches, it is a unique situation there." Smith has shown he can win big at Tulsa and Georgia, with three Sweet 16 appearances and four NCAA Tournament berths combined in the last four years. If UK hired him, he would be its first black men's basketball head coach. "I'm not naive enough to say there wouldn't be some quarters that would be a little hesitant about that," said Kellogg. "But by and large, I would think that's not a major issue. More would be experience." Speculation continues about where Bird will go By The Associated Press BOSTON — Larry Bird helped the Boston Celtics recruit Rick Piti- no. Now, with Pitino taking over as coach, the roles are reversed. As one of the first acts in that new job Tuesday, Pitino planned to call Bird to gauge his interest in joining what would be a dream front office — one of the best college coaches and one of the best pro players. The Indiana Pacers wanted Bird to return to his home state as coach, but a shakeup in the Celtics offices the past two days may be designed to satisfy Bird's complaints about how the organization was run. And Celtics owner Paul Gaston reportedly has intensified his efforts to keep Bird, who was involved in scouting and personnel evaluations during the past five seasons as a special assistant. On one of the most important days in Celtics history, Bird was home in Naples, Fla., playing golf. He was in a foursome with three others who won a raffle for his son's school. Pitino said at a news conference Tuesday in Lexington, Ky., that he was interested in keeping Bird but "Larry's got to want to be part of it" and decide whether he wants to coach or be in the front office. "I definitely will address that in the hours to come." Bird had called Pitino on April 2, two days after Kentucky's overtime loss to Arizona in the NCAA Finals, to see if he was interested in the Celtics. And Pitino said last month Bird would have to be part of the Celtics for him to join the team. In Indiana, the oft-quoted Pacers president Donnie Walsh declined to be interviewed Tuesday and refused to confirm whether he made an offer to Bird, who has said he received "a great offer" from the Pacers. "He says he doesn't want to say anything until he knows something definite," Pacers spokesman David Benner said of Walsh. "He's hoping to have things cleared up by Thursday." Bird appeared to be leaning toward Indiana, but then the team he led to three titles in his 13 seasons started cleaning house. It just came sooner than expected. Pitino told them during an emotional meeting Monday night that he had decided to accept an offer to coach the Boston Celtics after spending eight seasons at Kentucky. He made it official at a news conference on Tuesday. "I really couldn't believe it," said guard Wayne Turner, who is from Boston. "I had to hear it for myself. It was like, wow! But then we always knew coach P was a popular coach. "Even when he came and recruited me and after my first year here, he told us there's always going to be offers for a pro job. It just happened that this was the perfect fit." Forward Scott Padgett said that while the players hate to see him go, they understand his reasons for leaving Kentucky. "Everybody knows he had to leave because he likes to take on challenges," said Padgett, adding that several players cried when Pitino broke the news to them. "We felt we couldn't take that away from him because he's given us so much." Kentucky athletic director C.M. Newton had mixed feelings about losing the coach he lured away from the New York Knicks in 1989. "I feel sadness that we're losing a great coach, sadness that we're losing someone I admire and respect very much, sadness of losing a friend, someone I enjoy being around," he said. "But also a feeling of happiness in that I really have a good understanding of Rick's excitement and enthusiasm toward this new challenge and career change he is facing." Kentucky Gov. Paul Patton said he was "heartbroken" by Pitino's decision but believes the coach leaves the program with a solid foundation. "I think the program is strong enough that there are other people who can carry on a great Kentucky tradition," he said. "But it's going to take a superior individual to maintain that tradition. Rick Pitino rebuilt it." University of Kentucky president Charles T. Wethington Jn said he regretted seeing Pitino leave the program that produced a national title in 1996. "We have the highest regard for the job he's done here," he said. "The university will always feel a debt of gratitude for the tremendous work he's done in bringing the University of Kentucky back to national prominence in college basketball." University of Delaware president David Roselle, who hired Pitino in 1989 when he was UK president, said Pitino left a positive mark on the institution. Piti- no accepted the job after then program was placed on a two-year probation from the NCAA for recruiting and academic violations. "He has not only reinstated Kentucky basketball but he has taken it to a higher level than it has ever experienced," he said. "So I'm a complete, total fan of Rick Pitino's and I greatly respect what he did." Florida coach Billy Donovan, who played for Pitino at Providence and coached under him from 1989-94, said Pitino's departure is "a big loss for college basketball." "He has made an enormous impact on the lives of many players, coaches and people involved in the game," he said. Guard Jeff Sheppard said Pitino won't soon be forgotten at Kentucky. "We'll be Celtics fans this year," he said. "We'll always be Rick Pitino fans." HEART OF AMERICA SPORTS CAMPS KANSAS PREMIER CAMPS BOYS & GIRLS AGES (9-17) SIGN UP TODAY!
