Orville Bierls Find Carroll Relaxing After Life in Boston Carroll's come a long way in; 13 years says Mrs. Orville Bierl,' and she's In a position to ibe especially observant about the dramatic changes in Carroll's appearance. The Bierls lived in Carroll for two years, following their marriage, and then moved to her home town ( of Boston, Mass., where they have lived for the last 13 years. The family left Boston on Christmas night, and was stranded in a motel for four days during a snow storm, before they got to Carroll. "When we finally did get here,; my husband almost didn't recognize the town," laughed Marion Bierl. With the new additions and urban renewal, Carroll was certainly a different town than the one the Bierls had left 13 years before. The family was forced to move when an interstate highway was going to go through their house. The interstate, and the opening of the new Bierl's Parkway Furniture Store influenced their decision to move here. The concensus is they're glad to be here. They find life in Carroll more relaxed, and "you get to know people quicker and easier." The kids which include David 13, a freshman at Kuemper High School; Gregory 12, Michael U, Francis 10, and Leanne 7, all students at St. Lawrence School; enjoy the smaller town, Mrs. Bierl said. She likes the spontaneity of unexpected coffee callers. Coffee klatches have given Marion Bierl some new experiences, such as the come- as-you-are coffee she recently attended. Being back in a more rural life has some drawbacks for MarionY such as the 13 ducks she and her sons cleaned, following a hunting trip by her husband and his friends. "I'm still not quite sure why we were so lucky to get to clean everyone's ducks," she said. Mr*. Bierl joined Newcomers Club as soon as they got settled, Times Herald, Carroll, la. *• Monday, Nov. 9, 1970 * even though it meant going out in the "cold, cold January" winds to get to the meeting. "I really enjoy Newcomers," she said. She will serve as social chairman for the club the next six months, and is currently working on plans for a couples' Christmas party for Newcomers. She has become a. Brownie leader at St. Lawrence School and likes working with the girls. Her daughter Leanne is in the troop, which Has been mainly working on crafts. Mrs. Bierl lists her other hobbies as knitting and reading. She's knitted sweaters for her husband and children, and decided it's time to work on a sweater for herself. Upholstering furniture is a family project. They got started on the hobby when a favorite chair of Mrs. Bierl's needed recovering.. Since then, they've done another chair," a couch and dining" room - chairs. Mr. Bierl, who works at his brothers' furniture, store*, also likes to make furniture. A handsome round coffee table and end table in their living room are a testimony to his talents. The family likes to travel, and having seen most of New England, are looking forward to traveling west, and perhaps seeing the Pacific Ocean. She is also hoping for a vacation back east to visit with her family, including her twin sister, and her other set, of twin sisters. The Bierls especially like unexpected . "little" . trips. A weekend in New Hampshire once turned into a trip to Expo 70. One of their most- memorable vacations was a fishing trip to Canada. "When we left Boston, the city was so hot, but it was cool and refreshing in Canada," Marion Bierl recalled. The family is also looking forward to building their own home in Car­ roll, although they have no date as yet for beginning construction. Mrs. Bierl likes to bake "anything that tastes good," and has given a recipe for a family- favorite Golden Raisin Nut Cake, which she said is nice for the holidays, and not' as rich as fruitcake. Marion Bierl is Italian, and the family enjoys one of her Italian dishes usually once a week.' Some special ingredients, such as Italian sausage, are hard to find in this area, so Mrs. Bierl has giver, a recipe for Chicken Cacciatore which .the family really enjoys. Golden Raisin Nut Cake 1 package white raisins % cup butter VA cups sugar 2 eggs 3 cups flour Vh tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. cloves 1 tsp. nutmeg 1 pinch salt 1 pinch soda ' ' 2 cups chopped walnuts Simmer raisins in 2 cups water. Reserve 1 cup of this liquid to use in the cake. Drain raisins. Cream shortening and sugar; add eggs. Gradually add all dry ingredients, alternating with the 1 cup of juice from the raisins. Add nuts and raisins. Bake at 350 degrees 45 minutes to 1 hour in an angel food loaf pan, 14x4x3 y2-inches. Chicken Cacciatore 6 tbsp. salad oil or fat 2 2% to 3 lb. chickens, cutup Vz cup minced onions % cup minced peppers 4 minced cloves garlic, or garlic salt. 1 No. 2% can tomatoes (3% •cups)- .. 1 8-oz. can tomato sauce Vz cup Chianti wine (optional) 3% tsp. salt Vz tsp. pepper Vz tsp. allspice 2 bay leaves Dash cayenne pepper In hot fat in • large skillet, saute, chicken until golden on Over The Back Fence A recent cartoon, depicting two women in a grocery store, had the caption, "Let's hurry and get out of here before the prices go up." At times that little cartoon may seem to ring of truth, but price increases do not always serve to pad the pockets of the merchants. So-called innocent consumers, committing certain thoughtless or inconsiderate acts are unknowingly adding to the price you and I pay for merchandise. In some stores, loss due to abuse or misuse runs as high as 5 to 10 per cent. This is the amount which must be added on the cost of merchandise just to keep the store open to serve you. In a pamphlet prepared for the Florida Agricultural Extension Service, Mary N. Harrison, consumer education specialist, discusses some of the problems created by the consumers which help determine or raise the retail price of an item. At the grocery store . . . Several .pounds of.,'beans snapped samples.' This loss must be added to the cost of beans sold." The unwanted carton of ice cream, left near the check-out counter because "it was too expensive," will be more expensive after it's melted. Cleaning up after careless consumers is expensive. A small store spends the equilavent of lVz hours of labor daily picking up trash discarded by customers. This does not include the cost of routine janitorial service. Main CENTER Carroll, Iowa Vi cup flour Vz tsp. salt VA tsp. tabasco sauce 1 cup milk 2 tsp. minced onion Vi cup finely grated Swiss :cheese 5 egg yolks 1 can (8 J /2 or 7-oz.) tuna in vegetable oil, drained and flaked % cup minced parsley 1 can (3-oz.) broiled, chopped mushrooms^ well. drained 6 egg whites (without even a trace of yolk) In a 3-quart saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Stir in flour, salt and tabasco; remove from heat. Gradually stir in the milk, keeping smooth. Return to moderate heat and, stirring constantly, cook until sauce thickens and comes to a boil; remove from heat. Add onion and cheese. With a whisk beat in the egg yolks, one at a time. Stir in tuna, parsley and mushrooms. Cool for 10 minutes. Beat egg whites until they hold stiff straight peaks when beater is slowly withdrawn; fold into tuna mixture. Turn into an ungreased 2-quart souffle dish. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven until top is rounded and golden brown and a cake tester inserted in center comes out clean, about 45 to 50 minutes. Serve at once. Serves 4 to 6. A creamed vegetable which can act as a sauce would go nicely with this souffle. ^omngiip? from, l ^our collection. Simmer uncovered 30 to 40 minutes, or until chicken is fork tender. Pass the French bread! Serves 8. John Love has been given conservation bond No. 1 of the Colorado Society for the Preservation of the Narrow Gauge. The society is trying to prevent abandonment of a narrow guage railroad freight line that zigzags back and forth across the Colo- irado-New Mexico boundary. A Woman Lawyer Blames Most Divorces on Women By JOHN FITZGERALD (Associated Press Writer) MELBOURNE (AP) - One of Australia's leading divorce lawyers believes newspapers should run a headline once a week reading: "Men, don't get married." And the lawyer is a WOMAN — Joan Rosanove QC (Queen's Counsel) who celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary recently. "I \iias lucky — I got a good man," she said. But Mrs. Rosanove, 74, blames women for 19 out of every 20 marriage breakdowns. "Often, I looked across my office desk at a woman seeking legal help and thought 'poor fellow'," she said. "For some reason, the woman failed the man. Women don't work on the job of making the man happy. "Admittedly, there's always the man who is no good. But he's a rarity compared with the woman." Mrs. Rosanove said that despite this, the law was almost always on the woman 's side. "I've known women — and they can get dreadfully bitchy at this stage — to take a man for everything he's worth, then demand mere," she said. "The sadness is the way judges give it to them. "There should be notices in newspapers every week telling people about the law under the big heading: 'Men, don't get married'." Mrs. Rosanove said her divorce cases warned her how marriages could go wrong. "Many times I secretly touched wood in court and thought how lucky it was that the woman in the witness box wasn't me," said Mrs. Rosa­ nove. "The secret of marriage is working together." Her husband, Edward Rosa­ nove, 73, a former dermatologist, said he attributed his years of married bliss thus: "I always chewed on • pip* during an argument and so I always kept my mouth shut. "The only damage was to four pipes. "I always apologized if I was wrong and I sent her off to work to make her life more interesting. "As a cook she was a good lawyer." ALMOST HOOKED PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — Mrs. Anna van Remsburg was hooked on salmon— almost literally. A large fish hook was inside a can of salmon she opened recently. She felt the hook before swallowing the mouthful. "I was in pain for an hour," she said, and salmon is no longer her favorite seafoood.
