He and another sopho-more Cadets member also were told to do pushups and situps. WHILE RUNNING back to the dormitory, Goodrich reportedly collapsed, but was encouraged by the other students to keep running, school officials said. Goodrich was placed In a dormitory shower to revive him. Police were called, and Goodrich was taken to SL Joseph Hospital In Bryan after cardlopul- monary resuscitation. He died at 3:45 p.m.

The exercise under orders last-" ed about an hour, said Robert Wiatt, security director. Wiatt said details of the case will be presented to a Brazos County grand jury this month. He said the students could be charged with In- voluntary manslaughter or face university disciplinary action, which could be suspension or expulsion. Lee said Goodrich's body temperature was 104 degrees hen he was admitted to the hospital. CORPS OF CADETS officials said Friday that all physical training in the corps will be suspended while the circumstances of Goodrich's death are investigated. Corps members today will wear black armbands and march to muffled drums at the traditional parade before the home football opening game.

Campus flags are at half-staff. Col. Donald Burton, corps commander, said the corps is in a state of "shock and mourning." Goodrich transferred to this semester from a community college In New York. He was being subjected to what the Corps of Cadets calls motivational exercise, in which freshmen and sophomores are ordered by juniors and seniors to do pushups and other calisthenics. The Corps of Cadets, which comprises about 6 percent of the student body, is a quasi-military student group not associated with the Reserve Officers' Training Corps.

A senior Corps of Cadets member in Goodrich's dormitory said upperclassmen are always informed about other cadets who have medical conditions that would make heavy exercise dangerous. "A person never makes somebody do something that they didn't do themselves when they were underclassmen," said the student, who asked that his name not be used. Set in Martinique in 1931, the film by writer-director Euzhan Palcy Is a saga of hope in which the young protagonist, a sugar-cane-shack orphan with a gift for learning, uses education to escape dismal surroundings. The story recalls Martin Ritfs Sounder (1972), but manages to be even sunnier than that fine film. Films addressing such important Issues as the economic oppression of entire cultures often wear a mantle of solemnity or worse, a kind of maudlin air of self-proclaimed nobility. Not so in Sugar Cane Alley. This French-language film says everything it has to say without a preachy tone.

MUCH OF Palcy's success comes from a narrative that moves quickly and naturally. (The screenplay Is an adaptation of a novel. Rue de Cases Negres, by Joseph Zobel.) Much time is devoted to developing a sense of time and place and it is quite a place. The blacks, who chop sugar cane for white bosses and owners, earn wages that barely pay for meager portions of lousy food and rum. Jose (Garry Cardenat) lives with a grandmother who hopes t2 spare him life in the fields.

She and another delightful character, the wise old man Medouze, push him toward learning. When he passes an aptitude test, he is allowed to go to school In the capital, Fort de France. JOSE'S FIRST composition Is so good that the schoolmaster accuses him of plagiarism. Throughout the telling of this fascinating story, Palcy, who is just 28, maintains a mute point of view and guides her actors in a way that makes us feel the reality, the truth of their situation, and not the mere drama or sadness of it For this she 7 is deeply indebted to the wonder- ful Darling Legitimus as the grand- mother, Ma Tine, and Douta Seek as the wise Medouze. Cardenat was said to be an untrained actor before the shooting of the film.

If that's the case, he's a natural and a major find. Sugar Cane Alley, unrated; contains no objectionable material; at the Varsity. Storewide Sale ITS3! Stfck Av0.
