Bl Austin American-Statesman Saturday, September 1, 1984 'Flashpoint' gets passable rating despite flat effort by lead actors By PATRICK TAGGART Amarican-Statatmaii Staff Flashpoint is a drama about two of the dumbest border patrolmen who ever worked the Rio Grande. Here they are, Logan and Ernie (Kris Kristofferson and Treat Williams), practically awash in evidence that the theoretical second gunman of the John F. Kennedy assassination is in their midst So why does it take until the movie is almost over, and one of them Is dead, before the other figures out what we knew early on? If director William Tannen and screenwriters Dennis Shryack and Michael Butler know, they are not telling. The filmmakers lose little time showering us with information that points to the inevitable. Our law officers begin their day roaming the Southwest Texas desert, installing seismic devices designed to detect the flow of illegal aliens. Way out in the far reaches of his sector, Logan discovers a Jeep buried in sand. When he digs it out he finds a skeleton, a bag containing $800,000 in cash, Texas plates dated 1963, and a gun case containing a rifle with a telescopic sight Later, they learn from a coin shop owner that one of the bills in the bag was printed in Dallas. The men have no idea what they have discovered. (Beam us up, Scotty. There's no sign of intelligent life here.) They are smart enough to ponder splitting the money and quietly heading for Mexico. Before they can do that things become terribly complicated. First there is the matter of dealing with their girlfriends, who are played u Wt must Iquidata larga Inventory of top quality catling ton ft bta kits, at Rqutdation aju-l p-m. Review by Jean Smart and Tess Harper. Then there's the cagey old desert rat Armadillo (Roberts Blossom), who Is complaining about the regular arrivals and departures of a private plane in an area not far from where the jeep was discovered. Last but far from least is the presence of federal agents, led by the broadly sinister Kurtwood Smith. Director Tannen, making his feature film debut moves the action at an adequate pace and achieves a fair amount of tension in the process. He wasn't able to tie up all of those plot elements in a way that would avoid confusion, nor was he able to get much enthusiasm out of bis lead performers. Kristofferson relies largely on persona. Williams spends most of the film shouting. It is left to durable characters like Blossom (Reuben, Reuben) and the great Rip Torn (wasted in the role of a sheriff) to provide some meager seasoning. It's a passable B movie. Those willing to trade a little implausibil-ity for some pleasing desert photography and 100 minutes in air conditioning won't be cheated. Flashpoint, rated R for violence and profanity, is at the Americana and Aquarius. 52" CASABLANCA STYLE 3-Speed. Reversible. Antique or polished brass. Lite a aqc adaptable.
