Lynd. How many can resist the 1 attractiveness of ruffing losers with dummy's trumps? If one ruff is all one is due to get, sometimes it's better done late than early. South won West's trump lead and quickly cashed two high clubs and ruffed a club in dummy. Next he led a low diamond to his king and West's ace, and West returned another trump. With the spare ace offside, there was now no way to make use of dummy's diamond queen, and the game was one down.

South makes his game if he develops diamonds early and uses the club ruff later as an entry to dummy's diamond queen. At trick two, he leads a diamond honor and West's ace wins. South wins West's second trump lead and cashes his remaining diamond honor. The high clubs are cashed and a club is ruffed with dummy's trump ace. South discards his last club on dummy's diamond queen and returns to his hand by ruffing a diamond with any one of his high trumps.

South pulls West's last trump and is now in position to try for an overtrick by leading to the king of spades. This fails, of course but South still has a trump left for his tenth trick.
