Obituaries Jacob Ross Metz Active in county's agricultural community, development of education facilities Jacob Ross Metz, 85, 12227 Huntingdon. He was also a member Ash Lane, Allcnsville, died at 2:15 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, at his home Born Sept.

17, 1923, on his parents' home farm in Aliensville, Brady Township, he was a son of the late Leroy B. and Minnie M. (Headings) Metz. The home is now the residence of Jaincs and Carol Metz. He was united in marriage to the former Jeanne M.

Barclay March 9, 1946. Mrs. Metz survives at home. In addition to his wife, Mr. Metz is survived by three children, Judy (Metz) Eagle, Camp Hill; Larry G.

Metz and wife, Brucette, Aliensville; and David R. Metz and wife, Cathy Jo, Mill Creek; seven grandchildren. Garry P. Eagle and wife. Heather; Stephen B.

Metz and companion, Dotlie Thompson; Jeffrey R. Metz and wife, Danielle; Emily (Metz) Keggan and husband, Shaun; Heather Jo (Metz) Strauss and husband, Ben; Beth N. Metz and Fiance, Travis Gilmore; and Amy E. Metz; and eight great-grandchildren, Conner, Brcnden and Aleia Eagle, Vincent, Wyatt and Toni Ann Metz and Emma and Seth Strauss. He is also survived by a brother, T.

Ray Metz and wife, Jane, Mill Creek; a sister-in- law, Frances M. Metz, Aliensville; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, David S. Eagle a grandson, David Ross Eagle; three sisters, Florence Weaver, Bernice Merritts and Marion Brown; and two brothers, Eldon Metz and Roy B. Metz Jr.

Mr. Metz was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Aliensville, where he served as lay leader and superintendent of the Sunday school. He was also on the executive and finance committee for the Upper Susquehanna Synod of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He was a board member of the Bedford County Grange Mutual Insurance Co.

for 49 years and a board member of the Huntingdon. Area School District for 18 hayJJJg served as president four of those years. He was instrumental in the forming of the Huntingdon County Vocational Technical School, Mill Creek. He also helped to initiate with the original board for the Agway Cooperative Inc. Mr.

Metz served as a board member for 20 years at PNC Bank, of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, the Atlantic Dairy Cooperative and Northeast Breeders Association, a 10- year chairman of the Holstein District Dairy show, a 40-year member of the Holstein Breeders Association and was instrumental in organizing the Holstein Club for Huntingdon County. Mr. Metz served as superintendent of livestock, hay and grain division and as harness race secretary for the Huntingdon County Fair Board. He was the chairman for the board of directors of the Huntingdon County Farmers Home Administration and was a member of the Huntingdon County Dairy Promotion Board, where he served as treasurer. In addition, he was a senior member of the Brady Township board and the audit committee and was a member and held various offices on the Aliensville High School Alumni Association.

He was instrumental in forming the bicentennial celebration for Aliensville and was also a member of the Quartet for 50 years. He also wrote the history of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the cemetery. Mr. Metz was a 1941 graduate of Aliensville High School and a 1942 graduate of Huntingdon High School.

He attended Penn State University for two years. He was co-owner and operator of Lake Vale Ayre Farms and a forestry business with his son in Aliensville. He was also instrumental in the planning of Wishmere Acres, a development in Aliensville. Mr. Metz enjoyed doing woodworking projects, reading, studying the history of Big Valley and genealogy.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held in his honor at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Aliensville, with Pastor Anna Ritter officiating. A luncheon will follow.

Interment will be made private and at the convenience of the family at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m.'Friday, Aug. 21, at Baggus Funeral Home, 3813 W.

Showalter Jr. Marshall J. Showalter 92, of 1123 Moore Huntingdon, died at 7:46 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at The Oaks at Westminster Woods, Huntingdon.

Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at his home, following an extended illness. Born Jan. 25, 1926, in Johnstown, he was a son of the late Walter D. and Hettie M.

(Altman- shofer) Shore. He married the former Irene G. Harpster April 4, 1945, in the Tyrone United Brethren Church. Mrs. Shope survives at home.

Mr. Shope is survived by three children, Walter D. "Danny" Shope 111 and Thomas A. Shope and wife, Romona, all of Huntingdon; Gary J. Shope and wife, Lynn, Hershey; and four grandchildren, Ashley, Alison, Jordan and Alex.

He is also survived by three siblings, James Shope, Shirley, Robert Shope, New Waterford, Ohio; and Eileen Mendenhall, Beaver Falls; and a niece, Nancy Smith of Huntingdon, who was reared in the Shope home. He was preceded in death by a daughter and son, Connie Lou Shope and Brian David Shope; and a sister. Norma Bratmeyer. Mr. Shope was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, Huntingdon.

He was active in lay ministry with prison ministries at SCI Huntingdon and SCI Smithfield and Gideon's Society. He made three trips to Gabon, Africa, as a hospice volunteer. He served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during World War II, having served aboard the USS LST 178, USS LST 246 and USS Midway, seeing action in five major battles. Mr. Shope was a graduate of Juniata Valley High School.

He first worked as a carpenter and cement finisher and then worked for Owens-Corning Fiberglas, Huntingdon, for 14 years. Since 1962, he was the of Shape's Glass and Radiator, Smithfield, until March 2008. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at the Robert E.

Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Jarry Wise officiating. Interment will be made in the Mooresville Cemetery, Petersburg. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug.

Womack 1964 graduate of Captain Jack High School Beverly A. Womack, 62, formerly of Mount Union and most recently of Harrisburg, died May 18. 2009, in Harrisburg. Bom Dec. 4, 1946, in New York City, she was a daughter of the late Edna Jones, who had resided in New York City, N.Y.

She came to Mount Union at an early age to live with her late grandmother, Lucille Jones Lowery and her husband, John. She was the last surviving member of her family. Miss Womack was a member of the Bethel AME Church, Mount Union, where she was active in youth programs and served as the church pianist. She was a 1964 graduate of Captain Jack Joint High School. Following graduation, she relocated to Harrisburg.

She retired from the Harrisburg School District, where she had held various positions. She most enjoyed her time at Foose Elementary School, where the staff and students referred to her as "Miss Bev the Library Lady." She was also a former employee of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at Pinamonti's Lottery, where she was known as "The Lottery Lady." Miss Womack was loved and will be fondly remembered by all her friends and classmates. A favorite pastime was taking bus trips with her friends. Graveside memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug.

(AP) A Southern California man sent to prison for seven years for falsely claiming to be an attorney has been sentenced to two more years for posing as a lawyer again days after he was released. Prosecutors say 64-year-old Harold Goldstein got the maximum sentence Monday for violating the terms of his supervised release.

Goldstein was sentenced to seven years in federal prison in 2003 for using the name of a Northern California attorney to represent clients in court. He was also convicted of mail fraud for sending solicitation letters to inmates. U.S. Attorney's Office spokesman Thom Mrozek says Goldstein again started claiming he was a lawyer only days after he was released on May 1. Vol.

9 a.m.- Sat. 9 a.m. SpM. Columnist Robert Novak dies after brain cancer battle WASHINGTON (AP) Robert Novak, the political columnist who played a central role in the Valerie Plamc CIA leak case, died Tuesday. He was 78.

He died at his home in Washington after a battle with brain cancer that was diagnosed in July 2008, said his wife, Geraldine Novak. A household face as co-host of CNN's "Crossfire," Novak had been a columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times lor decades. Novak also produced many scoops, including the 2003 column in which he outed Plame as a CIA agent. The article was published eight days after Plame's husband, Joseph Wilson, said the Bush administration had twisted prewar intelligence to exaggerate the Iraqi threat of nuclear weapons. Citing two Bush administration officials, Novak revealed Plame worked for the CIA on weapons of mass destruction.

That blew her cover as a CIA operative and led to the investigation of who leaked that information, and eventually to the conviction of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice for lying to investigators about his conversations with reporters about Plame. Libby's prison sentence was later commuted by President Bush. Born and raised in Jolict, 111., Novak began his career in journalism in high school as a sports stringer for the Joliet Herald-News, then worked at the Champaign-Urbana Courier while attending the University of Illinois. Following college, he served stateside in the U.S.

In 1958, Novak joined the staff of the Wall Street Journal and soon became their chief congressional correspondent. In 1963 he teamed up with the late Rowland Evans Jr. to pen a political column, "Inside Washington," that lasted 30 years.
