GOLF: PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem an-nounced that the tour will go along next year with a new rule that chances the grooves in irons and wedges. The U.S. Golf Association and Royal Ancient Golf Club announced last year that effective Jan. J. the dimensions hi grooves from the five-iron through wedges would be made smaller to create less spin when the ball was struck.

The idea was to make shots out of the rough more difficult putting a higher premium on driving accuracy. Fin-chem was under increasing pressure from plavers and some equipment companies to postpone the new rule. But after a spirited discussion by the PGA Tour policy board, Finchem decided to stay the course. He allowed five runs and lost for the first time in five starts.

I WHAT HAPPENED: Right-hander Rick Porcello gave up the game's first five runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and the A's put a halt to their losing streak at five games. Mark Ellis' two-run homer in the fifth made it 4-0. Porcello lost for the first time in five starts. Rookie left-hander Brian Anderson, who allowed nine runs (three earned) in Detroit in mid-May, held the Tigers to one run in his innings. Milwaukee 10, New York 6 I STAT OF THE DAY: In six seasons, Giambi has finished either first or second in the AL in walks. He entered Monday with the lowest batting average of any AL regular, .203. But he still has that good eye, as he showed when he walked on a 3-2 pitch from Porcello with the game scoreless in the fourth. The walk kick-started the Athletics' offense and led to the game's first two runs. I Florida 4, Washington 2 I TURNING POINT: With two on and two out in the third, Marcus Thames put in a bid for a three-run homer that would have given the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

His drive to left had home-run distance, but it went foul. Thames struck out swinging to end the inning. I OH, THAT BULLPEN: Despite giving up a homer to Ryan Sweeney, left-hander Fu-Te Ni looked impressive in his debut. He relieved Porcello in the fifth and began his career by fanning Jason Giambi swinging on a 92 m.p.h. fastball.

Ni retired the five hitters he faced besides Sweeney, three of them on strikeouts. It's already time to anticipate his facing lefty mashers Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau back-to-back this weekend in Minnesota. I SAY WHAT? Placido Polanco went 0-for-4. He entered the game with the highest career average of any active player against the A's at .399. And that doesn't count his .529 performance (9-for-17) against the A's in the Tigers' sweep ofthe 2006 ALCS.

I TWO CENTS: Ellis, Polanco's second-base counterpart, didn't play In the '06 ALCS because of an injury. Perhaps the A's would have avoided that sweep if Ellis had been able to participate. -JOHN LOWE San Francisco 10, St. Louis 0 Houston 3. The big spenders will be harder to find. Free agency opens today in the NBA, but there should be few fireworks this July. The blockbuster trades were last week, and the real free agent bonanza is next year. Financial difficulties, combined with the potential of one of the best classes ever in 2010, will have most teams keeping their check books closed this mer.

More than a dozen have already lined themselves up to be players when LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Amare Stoudemire can all become available, and may not want to waste precious salary cap space now. Back in February, Dallas owner Mark Cuban said he wouldn't want to be a free agent this summer. On Tuesday, he wondered if players might find it best to sign a short-term deal and try again in 2010, when there are more suitors. "How many players will sign one year deals to be able to take advantage ofthe huge amount of cap room next year?" he wrote on his Twitter page. Farmjngton Mils: Carol Frank, 62.
