San Saba News Star April 6, 1967 THE NEWS STAR SPORTS San Saba Track Team Brings Home Two Trophies From Meet Saba track team won second place team trophy and brought home probably the largest sprint relay trophy given In the State of Texas for high school competition, for first place in the 440-yard relay, according to Conch John Baskin. The track moot was held Saturday, April 1, at Ooldthwaite where Brady took top honors. Coach Baskin said the team did real well and he was well pleased with the results. The strong wind was a disadvantage to all competitors. Richland Springs Will Host District TrackMeetFriday (SC) Richknd Springs will host the District Track Meet Friday April 7, according to Coach Wallace Flkes.

The meet will begin at a.m. with finals scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Friday. Schools competing in the events will include Lometa, Liberty Hill, Florence, Bertram, Evant and Richland Springs. Springs will be entered in events including 440-yard dash: Wayne Adams and Jack Turner; 330-yard intermediate hurdles: Frank Pearce; 880 dash: William Gibson, Charlie Rankln, nnd Steve Patrick; 110 high hurdles: Frank Pearce; 100-yard dash: Dale Matlock; 220-yard dash; Cubby Pearce and Dale Matlock; mile run: Darwin Lewis and Barney Oldham; mile relay: Cubby Pearce, William Gibson, Wayne Adams and Jack Turner; 440 relay: Jack Turner, Cubby Pearce, William Gibson ad Mike Allen; shot put: Jerry Christmas and James Harlow; discus: Jerry Christmas and James Harlow; high jump: Jerry Christmas.

Chnn Priest, Jerry Marshall, John McRorey and Radow Keeney made up the first place sprint team with time of 44.9. Mark Cooksey, Bill Watkins, Mc- Rorey and Keeney took second place in the mile relay. In the 100-yard dash, Keeney was second with time of 10.0 seconds; Priest, fifth in 10.2; Mc- Korey, seventh in 10.6. Priest, Marshall, McRorey, Keeney, Cooksey and Watkins nil received individual medals for placing first or second in each of the events in which they participated. Priest, Marshall, Buster Car- tnouche participated in the 220- yard dash, with Priest running' fourth with time of 24.5 seconds.

Frankie Miller, Mitchell Riggs and Ircno Cantu ran the 440. Keith Shahan placed fifth in the 880-yard dash with time of 2:012. Danny Pierce and Valetino Cnntu also ran in the race. Running the mile for San Saba were Tony. Cantu, Welton Watson and Ernie Clark but they failed to place.

Participating in the 120-yard high hurdles were Joe Miller, Bill Watkins and Dick Little, with Miller placing sixth. In the 330-yard Intermediate hurdles, Miller also placed sixth, Frankie Miller, seventh; and Dick Little also ran the hurdles. Participating in pole vault were Phil Letbetter, Bill Watkins and Dick Little. 'Letbetter placed fifth in high jump. Marshall and Frankie Miller also participated in high jump.

Carmouche entered 'broad jump. Priest was fifth in dicus. The track team will participate in the District Track Meet at Brady Saturday, April 8. and Mrs. J. C. Gamblin visited Mrs. Henry Lewis at Richland Springs Sunday; afternswr Mr.

and Mrs. Harmon Sansom visited her father, J. F. (Boss) Shoemake and sister-in-law, Mrs. Harvey Shoemake, in the Elm Grove community Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bennett of Austin and Mrs. Leslie Griffin and children of Brownwood were weekend visitors with their parents and attended the Smith-Harvey wedding Saturday night. Mrs.

Terrance Walker and Mrs. Jerry Barrow of Liberal, Kans. and Mr. and Mrs. George Walker and Peggy of San Saba visited Mr.

and Mrs. Dee House Saturday night. Maynard Locker underwent minor surgery at Brady Hospital one day last week and is recovering nicely. Mrs. A.

J. House attended preaching and a fellowship meeting at the First Christian Church in Richland Springs Sunday night Mrs. Ellen Leach is a patient in San Saba Memorial Hospital SWH Cherokee Misfits Win First VB League Round San Saba Volleyball Association has just completed the first round of league play, with Cherokee Men and the Misfits named the champion, according to Travis 'Shaw, president of the association. Cherokee men, coac by Charles Perry, has been undefeated in this first round of play. Also, the women's team, the Misfits, coached by Mabel Led- ketter, has gone all the way without being defeated.

The second round began Tuesday April 4, for the eight men's teams and seven women's teams, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the local high school gym. Games are held each Tuesday, Thursday and Friday night. There is no admission charge for the games and everyone is welcome and urged to see these teams play. There are several good vollyball teams with outstanding players, and spectators ean be assured of an interesting evening spent a ching the games.

The men's team include Chero- Men, coached by Charles Perry; Sprites, by George Jennings; Wildcats, by Travis Shaw; Astros, Paul Golding; Rangers, by James Reavis; Herren Baptist, Gerald McKee; Jaycees, Bill Hardy; and Scrubs, Gene Christian. The women's team include Cherokee Women, coached by Mrs. Charles Perry; Misfits, Mabel Ledbetter; Rangerettes, Vivian Reavis; Astroettes, Pat Mahan; Swingers, Anita Miles; Spoilers, Bobby Churchill; and High School Girls, by Jean Priest. Local Netters Lose At Abilene Saba. tennis teams lost out in meet Abilene Saturday, April when the competition was very strong.

Robert Lee was first with 99 points; Lometa wtih points was second; Eden took third with 59; and Cherokee was fifth with 52 points. In the 440-yard relay, Cherokee was third and Richland Springs, fourth. Pearce placed third for Richland Springs in the 120-yard high hurdles.

Cherokee's Gray took first place in the 100-yard dash clocked at 10.2, and Bush of Cherokee was third. Turner won fourth and Adams, sixth for Richland Springs in the 440-yard dash. Pearce placed second in the 330- yard intermediate hurdles. Gray was second and Bush, fifth for Cherokee in the 220-yard dash. In the mile run, Lewis of Richland Springs clocked time of 4:59.4 to take second place and Duarte of Cherokee won third place.

Richland Springs was third in the mile relay and Christmas placed sixth in ciiscus for the Coyotes. In the 880-yard run, Hiilsmeier of Cherokee took second place and Gibson of Richland Springs, third. Other schools participating included Gustine, Blackwell, Milano, Melvin, Rochelle, Eyant and Norton. E. M. Mask and Mrs, Merle Taylor, were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, Goldthwaite Church of Christ with Douglas LcCroy, minister, of- iciating. Burial was In Regency Cemetery with Wilkins Funeral Home charge.

Mrs. Taylor died Monday, March 27, in a Goldthwaite nursing lome. She was born Donna Jones, Aug. 5, 1876, at Regency, daughter of f. M.

Jones and Jane Cain Jones. She was married to E. B. Shaw at San Saba in 1906, He died in 1936. She was then married to J.

Taylor at San Saba in 1946. Taylor died In 1948. 'She was a member of Goldthwaite Church of Christ. Survivors include four sons, (laymer Shaw of Albuquerque, N. Clayton Shaw of Goldthwaite, Denver Shaw of Comanche and Oden Shaw of Brookesmith; one daughter, Mrs: J.

D. Coffey of Beeville; one brother, Alton Jones, of Regency; 18 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers included Malcolm Mask, Jerry Petty, Jim Shaw, Glynn Miller, Louvell Sides and Merle Taylor. Easter holiday guests of Mrs. A.

M. Spears were her son and family, Mr. and Mrs. A. A.

Spears and Stephen Aubrey of Houston nnd her daughter, Mrs. Max Murphy of New Brauftfels. Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Sanderson and son, Shawn, of Odessa were weekend guests of his parents, Mr.

and Mrs. Edgar Sanderson and family. Mrs. Roxie Norris left Tuesday of this week for an extended visit with her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs.

She died March 27 in a nursing home at Goldthwaite. Funeral services were held in the Church of Christ and interment was in Regency Cemetery. Those from here attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Merle Taylor, Mr.

and Mrs. Bob Taylor, Mrs. R. A. Taylor and Earl Parks.

Former Locker residents attending were Mrs. Minnie Parker of Rotan and 0. W. Taylor of San Saba. Mrs.

W. E. (Minnie) Parker of Rotan has been a guest of her sister, Mrs. R. A.

Taylor, and other relatives and friends here for several days. The latest report from A. J. Reavis of JBrowttwood is he has been dismissed frotti Mefhorial Hospital there and is recovering in a nursing home. Gertrude Parks of San Sr.ba and Katy Myrle Parks of Dallas, Margaret Parks of wood and the Dean Barrett family of Hillsboro were recent guests of Mr.

and Mrs. Earl Parks. Mr. and Mrs. Audy Cdffman and sons of Ft.

Worth and daughter and son-in-law of Lab- bock were visitors this week with Mr. and Mrs. Henry Battiett. They also visited Roy and Viola Vest and Mrs. Pauline Fulton and ily.
