Space Studies May Add Years to Men's Lives NEW YORK (AP) - Space research may lead to a better and even longer life for man. Roy W. Johnson, director of the Pentagon's Advanced Research Projects Agency, said this today in a speech prepared for a convention of the Life Insurance Assn. of America. Johnson said space projects involve almost a billion dollars this fiscal year, with 700 million dollars of it devoted to research. Other Advantages Aside from the contribution to national defense, he said, the programs 'produce knowledge and techniques permitting still further increases "in our national productivity, our standard of living, and our way of life." "Our manned satellite programs cnn lead to better health and life for all Americans," Johnson said. "We shall have to develop foods and vitamins of great energy content, packaged and capsuled to efficiently and safely preserve the life of man in space. We may need drugs to perform new and wonderful missions for the space travel- era. May Benefit All "There is no reason to assume that such foods, vitamins and 1 drugs will not also benefit those of us who remain behind on our globe. ... | "In the vacuum of outer space,! we may find environmental cures; for the diseases of earthman; we; may even discover means to di-' rectly increase the human life j span."
