Local horror fans will have fun comparing the goofy sensibilities of "House" to the "Evil Dead" series of movies, which started filming around the same time. The wildly entertaining film deserves its growing reputation as a rediscovered cult gem.

The Detroit Film Theatre, in the auditorium of the Detroit Institute of Arts, is unveiling a summer season that includes international offerings as lavish as anything Hollywood has ever produced. The headliner is the new print of the 1927 sci-fi epic "Metropolis" (), which screens June 11-13 and 18-20.

More than 20 minutes have been restored to the Fritz Lang masterpiece about a futuristic city, a seductive robot and a conflict between the rich and the poor. "Avatar" just doesn't compare. A silly, surreal cross of Japanese horror, anime and just plain weirdness, this 1977 fever dream of styles makes you wonder: How did this ever get made? Though it's 33 years old, the film is only now being released in the United States.

Director Nobuhiko Obayashi reportedly based "House" on the eccentric ramblings of his 11-year-old daughter. It finds seven schoolgirls traveling to a creepy country house where, one by one, they're dispatched by evil forces in the form of a floating head, a bloodthirsty piano and a demonic house cat. More bizarre than scary, the movie employs an arsenal of visual effects, including "Hello backdrops, random animated sequences and musical numbers.
