Julv 13. For the Iflrst time In the history of Jamestown Sunday baseball was played here this week. The game was between the Jamestown and Ashtabula teams. Another game is scheduled for tomorrow, but as the church organizations of the city have taken up the matter, it 13 likely that the game will be stopped by a deputy sheriff.

At any rate, ancther large crowd will be present. It is doubtful if any other place of this size In the State has resisted the Sunday baseball playing so long as Jamestown has. C. T. President Schurman of Cornell Fniversity announces that Joseph Porter Harris of Warsaw has been appointed to the office of secretary to the president.

Mr. Harris takes the position made vacant by the resignation of Herbert Crcmible Howe, Cornell, Mr. Harris graduated last June with high honors, being especially proficient In Latin arid Greek. i Robert S. Bradley of Boston has recently made an application for a re-reiver to be appointed to wind up the affairs of the Bradley Salt Company of Warsaw, X.

which has sold its pianr to tne National Salt Company of Xew York, Attorney-General Pavles heard the same last Tuesday. The ap plication was opposed by several of the stockholders of the corporation on the inline rendered it inadvisable at this time. The appiica tion was made on the ground that its charter had lapsed by non-use. The Xational Salt Company intends to pul down a w-ll on the borders of Canandaigua Lake, and the inhabitants of that village have been unduly exercised over the fact. The Xational people are not as yet certain whether, in sinking the well, they will find salt, oil or gas.

but from certain indications they ar willing to make the Investigation. The Warsaw Lumber Company sold the Xational Salt Company the material for the derrick and necessary accessories for the well, and that is the extent of Manager William ftum-bold's presence in that place, which ha3 caused so much wondering. At a meeting of the Wyoming County Medical Association held in Warsaw on the 9th, the association reorganized under the rules of the Xew York State Medical Association. Dr. Carl O.

Mann was elected president. Dr. P. S. Goodwin vice-president, and Dr.

Z. Gifford Truesdell secretary and treasurer of the association for the ensuing year. Doctors George D. Blackmer, A. C.

Way. Z. J. Lusk and L. C.

Broughton were elected delegates to the next meeting of the State Association In Xew York the third Monday Ip October, and Doctors Mann, Humphrey, Skiff and Goodwin, alternates. The many friends and acquaintances of Scott Snow, a former Warsaw boy, were shocked to learn of the sudden death of his wife in Hartford. which was caused by the explosion of a skyrocket, on the evening of July 4th, which left its trough, striking her in the leg, badly mangling it. She died from nervous shock. Her husband and two children survive.

His mother. Mrs. Robert Snow, was called to Hartford on Monday to attend the funeral. Mr. Snow will be remembered as the leader of the fine band of the 1st Connecticut Regiment, which was recently at the Pan-American Exposition with the Governor of that State and his staff.

The Pioneer picnic will occur -this year on Thursday. August 1st, on 'its grounds at Silver Lake, which are in readiness, and an effort is being made to get Lieutenant-Governor Woodruff to deliver the annual address. The Rev. H. E.

Gurney, pastor of the Congregational Church, will be absent for the coming1 two Sundays, and the. services at his church will be under the direction of the deacons. It will be a Sunday scHpol service, with short addresses and collection for the work. The next bunday the ladies will take charge of the service EW Lockport, July 13. There sems to be less prospect than ever of an early settlement of the machinists' strike in this city.

Involving 160 men, at the Holly Manufacturing Company. The prolonged struggle between the workmen and their employers is working an appreciable loss to the city. Besides the immediate effects felt by the machinists and the merchants, it is said the company is suffering considerable loss and if the strike continues, stands to lose large sums. The city of Cincinnati, for example, has stood ready to award three large contracts on which the Holly company is the lowest bidders, but has postponed action, it is reliably reported, at the instance of the sympathizers of union labor in the Ohio Jt is said the company has already lost one contract because of the disagreement with its men. Manager Lufkln of the Holly company, however, has publicly announced that the company will not consent to arbitrate the questions in dispute, the men demanding the nine-hour day with the 12 1-2 per cent, increase in wages.

The men are at liberty to return to their positions on the old terms, he announces, but further than that the company will not go. One of the labor leaders said: "It seems that a long, hard fight is ahead. It will now be a question of endurance. We have to fight the Xational Steam Pump trust and the great combine seems determined to refuse recognition of the labor unions. We believe we shall win, although we know the trust is powerful.

Both sids are enormous losers, but I think union labor will win in the end and their victory will redound to the benefit of capital and labor." The Rev. W. II. Reese of the First M. K.

Church created something of a furore by his address on methods pursued in the public schools. Mr. Reese now disavows any intention of directing his generalizations Ht the schools of Lockport. but says they apply to the public school system generally. To The Courier he said: "I have known girls and hoys, falling to pass in algebra, become discouraged fand leave school.

It should be arranged so that failure in any one or two branches of study should not operate to hold back students a whole year. Many bright pupils cannot master algebra, but in other branches they got aloijg splendidly and they may make very useful members of the community. The same may be said of other branches of study. The present system in vogue in nearly all pulUic schools could be vastly Improved. Mrs.

Benjamin F. Steel of Ontario Street entertained her lady friends Friday afternoon very charmingly. Mrs. Steele is one of Ixickport's most pleasant hostesses. Lockport will be well represented at the Western New York Firemen's convention to be held at Albion.
