ESP Slate Wednesday- Mitchell Kernels Score 18-4 By JIM JOHNSTON Republic Sports Writer Mitchell moved one game closer to an unblemished record before entering BSD play, but the Kernels must face one of their toughest non conference foes at Hitchcock Park Monday night. The Kernels, who defeated Wessington Springs 184 Saturday, host defending Class 'B' state champion Howard Monday at 6 p.m. And the Mitchell will be without three of its regular performers from this season. Paul Konrad, who recorded 15 strikeouts in hurling the Kernels to an easy win Saturday, will join second baseman Jeff Stone and centerfielder Jay Trent in Alexandria, for a Kansas City Royals' tryout camp the first days of this week. Howard returns most of its from the 1970 state championship team and is the final non conference opponent for the Kernels before an SD doubleheader at Watertown Wednesday.

Unlike the Kernels quick start this season, Konrad had prob lems before finding success on the mound. Wessington Springs scored three times in the opening inning on a double by Ken Brodkorb and back to back by Brad Broderson and Jeff Jacomen. To make things even more shakey for the Mitchell starter, the Kernels failed to score in the first inning for the first time this season and Wessington Springs led 3-0 going into the last of the second. But it only took until the last of the second for the Kernel bats to begin to pop. The Kernels went through 11 batters and scored seven runs in the second inning.

Bill Simpson slapped a two run homer in the inning and Rick Beck hit his first of two round three run shot. And as the Kernels started to offensively, Konrad got in the seven inning game, also yielded a pinch hit single to Jerry Bull in the seventh. Stone, who has had trouble getting untracked for Mitchell this season, belted a three-run hornier to eeniterfjeld in the fourth toning and had rum- scoring single in the fiftlh. Beck's other home-run was a high drive over the lefitfield fence in the sixth fra-me. Wessington Springs starter Steve Rasmussen was charged with the loss.
