6 MONDAY, MAY 5, 1997 THE SALINA JOURNAL V SPOTLIGHT Students create exhibit A new student exhibit is on display at the Smoky Hill Museum. This exhibit, an addition to the school area of the main gallery, grew out of an enrichment class assignment at Happy Corner School on "Talking Walls." The students studied walls from around the world, such as the Great Wall of China, the Vietnam Memorial and Nelson Mandela's prison walls. Fifth- and sixth-graders Risa Patterson, Dana Rathbun and Jill Hocking wanted to do a history project of Happy Corner School. After discussing ideas with their teacher, Renee Toews, the girls started on a newspaper. Toews visited the Smoky Hill Museum to find information about the early days of Happy Corner. At this meeting, the idea of a museum exhibit was born. The girls interviewed two retired former teachers, Pat. Lindquist and Martha Laas. Fifth- and sixth-grade students, Dana Rathbun (from left), Jill Hocking and Risa Patterson, created an exhibit at the Smoky Hill Museum. They also conducted research in the Kansas Room at the Salina Public Library, read through all the board of education minutes since unification and researched the records at the Register of Deeds office. The Museum hours are Tuesday — Friday: noon to 5 p.m.; Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday: 1 to 5 p.m. SPOTLIGHT ORGANIZATIONS FROM PAGE 5 LAKE WILSON CLEAN-UP DAY: The Corps of Engineers and Lake Wilson Development Association sponsored the annual Lake Wilson Clean-Up Day April 19.
