GOLF THE SALINA JOURNAL Blackmar tops Sutherland in Houston Open playoff £ By The Associated Press THE WOODLANDS, Texas Phil Blackmar never gave up on himself. Not after losing his PGA Tour card after a miserable 1994 season, and not after blowing a two- stroke lead with one hole to play in the Houston Open. "Because I've come from so far down, it's a dream come true to win again," Blackmar said i « BLACKMAR Sunday after he birdied the first hole of a playoff with Kevin Sutherland for the 39- year-old's first victory since 1988. "I had doubts, but I knew somewhere inside I had a lot. of game left." Blackmar took a two-stroke lead to the par-4 17th, one of the toughesl holes on the PGA Tour. But his third shot, from the rough across the back left of the green, went into the water. "I was more in shock than anything else," said Blackmar, a former University of Texas star from Corpus Christi. "I went to 18 in a state of shock. I was thinking this is not time to go berserk." After driving into the right rough and leaving his approach in a bunker, he rattled in a 6-foot par putt to force the third straight playoff in (he tournament. Sutherland, 32. of Sacramento. Calif., who has been to qualifying school three times, had a chance to win in regulation, but his 45-foot downhill putt for birdie on No. 18 came up well short. In the playoff, also on No. 18. Blackmar put his second shot to 3 feet of the hole, while Sutherland's approach ended up 15 feet away. Sutherland's birdie attempt was short and to the left, while Blackmar's went in the heart of the cup for his third career victory, all of them in playoffs. Seniors: Sigel snaps Irwin's run HOOVER, Ala. — Jay Sigel had an eagle and a birdie over the first five holes and went on to beat the PGA Senior Tour's hottest player. Hale Irwin, and everyone else at the Bruno's Memorial Classic Sunday. Sigel shot a 2-under-par 70 over the blustery Greystone Country Club course to finish at 11-under 205 and win by three shots over Gil Morgan, five over Isao Aoki and six over Bob Eastwood. Irwin, who had two straight wins and four this year, played in the same group with Sigel and started four strokes behind him. But he shot a 3-over 75 and finished nine strokes back. The win was Sigel's first this year after five top-10 finishes, including a loss to Bob Murphy in a nine-hole playoff at the Toshiba Senior Classic in March. LPGA: Green wire-to-wire winner DAYTONA BEACH. Fla. — Tammie Green picked an appropriate tournament to end her three-year victory drought, winning the green jacket at the Sprint Titleholders Championship with a remark- able performance on the greens. Green shot a par 72 Sunday, a score that could have been much higher without a smooth, confident putting stroke that saved several crucial pars, as some of the game's best players were trying to catch her. She hit a wedge within 2 feet for birdie at the 18th for a 14-under 274 and a twd- stroke victory over two-time U.S. Open champion Annika Sorenstam, who closed with a 66. Another stroke back were Kelly Robbins, defending champion Karrie Webb and Cindy Schreyer. Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez, who won her 48th career title last week, shot a 72 and finished at 10-under 278. "It was difficult out there," said Green, who led after all four rounds and won $180,000 from the $1.2 million purse. the Salina Journal Toll Free In Kansas Call 1-800-827-6363 'Master Cart] Fax 913-823-3207 Receptionist 913-823-6464 - Press 1, then 2 S.
