Despite some impressive bursts this season, the Tigers haven't gotten more than a game above .500.

"We are not giving up hope," said manager Alan Trammell, whose club entered Wednesday 11 games out in the American League Central. "There is plenty of time left to somehow make a move." Dombrowski called Polanco "a good all-around player who is a "solid defensive player who is experienced and knows how to handle the bat." Polanco was expendable because of the ascent of young second baseman Chase Utley. "I'm sad but happy at the same time," Polanco told Philadelphia reporters. "I'm going to get a little more playing time." Polanco, who joined the Phillies from St. Louis three years ago, said he didn't push for a trade from Philadelphia.

"I just wanted to play," he said. "I wanted to stay here my whole life. It's very hard. The family is here, you get used to the city, you make a lot of good friends." Urbina just finished converting all eight of his save opportunities in a month as Troy Percival's replacement at closer. In his last 10 Tigers outings, Urbina allowed no runs and three hits in 10 innings.

Dombrowski didn't wait until the July 31 deadline approached to trade Urbina. Dombrowski had at least three reasons to deal now: He wanted to improve second base; the pen is better than the club envisioned; and Urbina asked to be traded. Urbina went 21-for-24 in save opportunities in his first season with the Tigers last year. The Tigers signed Percival in the off-season and moved Urbina to the eighth-inning set-up man. Percival returned last weekend.

Trammell said after Tuesday night's game in Los Angeles that Urbina asked to move back to the set-up role so Percival could reclaim the closer's job. "Ugie said he would pitch the eighth, but he really has not been happy," Dombrowski said. "So he had asked for an extended period of time to be traded. "We always told him if we felt we could help the Tigers and, that in turn would al DLwrasro SF Stanton pit'ttec tc 1 batter in 'he 3th. WP Sheets.
