Ordonez homered in the first game of the just-completed trip his first in 68 at-bats dating to Aug. 26. He has eight homers in 279 at-bats.

Shortstop Carlos Guillen thinks it's understandable Ordonez's power numbers have diminished. "He missed so much time before he came back to play every day," Guillen said. "That would make anyone weaker." Manager Alan Trammell said he has checked with Ordonez about his health, and the rightfielder has assured him that physically, he's OK. "I don't know him well enough to know if he really is OK," Trammell said. "Guys that have been productive often won't let you in on how they feel.

"He lost a lot of time to physical problems, so how can that not affect you when you come back and start playing? "I see someone who's worn down right now; next year I think you'll see more from him." ON SCHEDULE: Because of Thursday's off-day, left-hander Mike Maroth was able to stay on his regular day in the rotation and replace right-hander Jeremy Bonderman as Sunday's starter. Bonderman, who has tendinitis in his pitching elbow, will miss his last two scheduled starts this season. The Tigers said Bonderman has been battling the problem on and off since mid-season; he was held out of two recent scheduled starts. "It kind of stabilized, which is why we let him keep pitching," pitching coach Bob Cluck said. "But we decided it just wasn't worth it to run him out there two more times.

"He's a bulldog and doesn't ever want to miss a start. We explained the logic behind shutting him down and he understood. He admitted it was bothering him a lot and wasn't going away. He just can't pitch like this." MAKING CONTACT: When Placido Polanco fanned in the first game of Tuesday's dou-bleheader, it ended a streak of 79 plate appearances without a strikeout. The last Tiger with a longer streak was Trammell, who went 109 plate appearances without a strikeout in 1981.

Trammell said he sees some of himself as a player in Polanco. "His style is doing whatever it takes to help a team win," Trammell said. "This is an individual game within a team concept and he understands that."
