"I didn't want to let my team down," Budd said when asked what was going through his mind as he lined up for the winning field-goal try. "I knew I had to make it." The Broncos led 21-7 after Daniel Marks scored on a 15-yard run with 3:14 left.

But Smith (2i-of-39 passing for 205 yards) scored on a 4-yard run with 2:13 left to cap a 58-yard drive. Nine seconds later, CMU free safety Isaac Brown recovered a fumble by running back Daniel Marks on the Western 25. Four plays later, the Broncos scored on a 9-yard pass from Smith to Asante White with 54.9 seconds left in regulation. Budd kicked the extra point to tie it at 21 and force overtime. WMU has lost this season by three points to Illinois, four points to EMU, and now by three points overtime.

Coach Gary Darnell, whose job is in jeopardy, was asked if he feels snake-bitten. "I believe in a big rivalry, a prepared team wins," Darnell said. "I don't believe in snake-bitten. We have to find ways to finish. The whole concept of finishing has escaped us this year." The Broncos scored first on a 3-yard pass from Ryan Cubit (i9-of-3i for 256 yards and two touchdowns) to Tyson DeVree with 6:36 left in the second quarter.

They increased their lead to 14-0 on an outstanding 79-yard reception by Greg Jennings from Cubit with 1.3 seconds left in the third quarter. Jennings looked to be hemmed in near the sideline but made a sharp cut, got in the open and outraced the CMU secondary. But a little later Jennings rumbled a punt, caused by linebacker Thomas Keith and recovered by linebacker Doug Kress, and Central drove 25 yards in two plays. Seymour scored on a 5-yard run with left in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 14-7. You can reach JimSpadafore at (313) 223-4638 or jspadaforedetnews.com.
