For Western Michigan the loss could be the final blow in Gary Darnell's coaching tenure with the Broncos. For the fans who braved the cold, dreary and wet day at Waldo Stadium they were treated to a breath-taking finish as the Eagles scored with 21 seconds left on a 30-yard pass from Matt Bohnet to A.J.

Bennett for a 35-31 MidAmerican Conference victory. Eastern (3-4, 3-1) snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Broncos (1-5, 0-3) and won back-to-back road games on consecutive weekends for the first time since 1977. "This was a tremendous effort by our young men," Genyk said. "Early in the week Coach Darnell said I was a high-voltage guy and we definitely brought some electricity in that fourth quarter here to Waldo Stadium." It was another crushing defeat for Darnell and the Broncos, who also lost in the last minute at Illinois, 30-27. It was their fifth consecutive loss.

"I just hate it for our players and I hate it for our fans," said Darnell, who is headed for his fourth consecutive losing season after guiding the Broncos to consecutive MAC West titles in 1999 and 2000. "It's frustrating. We can't get that winning edge. "(But) Eastern Michigan did a great job. They really did." The Broncos seemed to have the game won.

They led 31-28 and were trying to run out the clock. But with 1:07 left, freshman running back Mark Bonds fumbled inside the EMU 30-yard line after being tackled by linebacker Kevin Harrison and defensive back Rontrell Woodruff recovered. 'We were thinking turnover, get the hall out, do something," said Harrison, who had 17 tackles. Six plays later, on third down-and-to at the WMU 30, Bohnet combined with Bennett for the winning touchdown. "I knew they (Broncos) were going to blitz and I knew the middle of the field would be open and he (Bohnet) made a great throw," Bennett said.

Bohnet had an off-day passing (13-of-35 for 225 yards with one interception) but he did throw for three touchdowns. The other two scores were for 20 and 34 yards to Eric Deslauriers, who had eight receptions for 142 yards. Andrew Wellock kicked field fals of 23 and 32 yards and i2-of-i3 for the season and 22-of-22 in extra points. Running back Anthony Sherrell (55 yards on six carries) scored on a 24-yard run for EMU's first touchdown but suffered a slight knee injury midway in the first half and didn't return. 'Anthony said he couldn't go full speed so we held him out," Genyk said.

"We also played without defensive back Chris Roberson (pulled muscle) but our kids came through." Western Michigan got an outstanding performance from junior wide receiver Greg Jennings, who had 11 catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Ryan Cubit completed 29 of 48 passes for 338 yards and a career-high four touchdowns (two interceptions). "Our goal is to be the Michigan MAC champion (to beat Western and Central Michigan) and to win this game is the first leg of that objective," Genyk said.
