The Big Ten's instant-replay experiment got a workout in the Michigan-Indiana game, as three calls were overturned during the game. Replay made its presence felt in a big way late in the first half, as the final two minutes of the half took an additional 14 minutes because of replay delays as officials reviewed two plays. With just more than two minutes left, officials reviewed an interference penalty against Indiana on a Michigan punt return. Indiana was called for the penalty on returner Leon Hall, who actually collided with teammate Alijah Bradley. It took nearly 10 minutes for Big Ten officials to handle the review.

They ruled there was no interference on the play. With nine seconds left, Indiana quarterback Matt LoVec-chio was credited with a i-yard touchdown run after he fumbled and recovered the ball in the end zone. He thought that was the case, at least. Michigan called a timeout, and the play was reviewed. Four minutes later, the Big Ten overturned the touchdown and said LoVecchio's knee was down when he fumbled the ball.

The ball was placed at the Michigan 2-yard line. The final review came with 12:17 't-'ft in tne fourth quarter when Indiana receiver Courtney Roby caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from LoVec-chio that was initially ruled incomplete. The play was overturned, and Indiana was credited with its second touchdown. Michigan Coach Lloyd Carr said coaches, players and fans must be patient with the instant replay process. "This is my experience, most of the time, when I look at all those things where I may have argued and got mad the great thing I love about the replay, they're going to take a look at it," Carr said.

"I say this it's a hard game to officiate." 2619 0 12.7 213 331 424 244.0 0 3136 378 00 327 32 28:17 937.7 0 4104 1-4 00 435 20 31:43 Michigan statistics 3.9 30 5.7 3.0 0.5 1.0 62 18 7 1 3 0 1 12 77 21 17 3 1 1 -31 i -vVi Diiir i it' li i' VW1--. Freshman tailback Max Martin also got a chance to play late in the game. Martin had seven carries for 21 yards. "He's been patient, he's worked hard," Carr said of Con1 zalcs, who came to Michigan as a quarterback. "I asked. him Injury update Sophomore receiver Steve Breaston did not make the trip to Indiana because of a finger injury suffered in the Iowa game. "There's a good chance he'll be back this week," Carr said. "We'll have to see how he responds." Defensive lineman Jeremy Van Alstyne, who supposedly was going to miss the season because of a knee injury, has made a remarkable comeback.

"He's made unbelievable 0 0 0 0 0 0 M. 0 TO 1 JO 0 Tot 6 6 5 5 progress," Carr said. "He returned to practice (last) week. I don't know when, but I am very confident that the point is going to come where he is going to be able to play this fall." Backup quarterback Matt Gutierrez, out with an arm injury since the first week of the season, threw the ball during pre-game warm-ups, as he has done before most games. He was the holder on kicks.

Richard, Martin play Backup quarterback Clayton Richard came in briefly in the final two minutes of the second quarter, but Carr said he regretted the move only because he put his quarterback in a difficult position. Richard entered the game with 2:04 left in the half and Michigan at its 16-yard line. Richard, from Lafayette, fumbled and recovered his first snap of the game. He was replaced two plays later by starter Chad Henne. "I put Clayton Richard in a real bad position at the end of the half," Carr said.

"We had made up our minds we were going to play him. With four minutes to go we thought we were going to get the football back and Clayton was going to go on. But then we returned the punt for the touchdown, we stopped them and got the ball back with (two minutes left), and we put him in down deep on the 16 yard line, and that's a mistake I made by putting him in that position." This was by no means a flawless performance by Henne, in his first road start since a 28-20 loss at Notre Dame three weeks ago. Henne fumbled twice against the Hoosiers, both coming in the second quarter. His first fumble marred an otherwise well-handled scoring drive that included Henne avoiding the IU blitz and completing a 15-yard pass to Edwards to convert on third down.

But one play after a 21-yard completion to tight end Tim Massaquoi, Henne fumbled at the Indiana 2-yard line. "The snap was fine, but I felt like a guard's hand came around when he was pulling and just nipped the bottom of the ball," Henne said. The Hoosiers and their anemic offense they finished with 214 yards, including 61 rushing failed to move the ball and were forced to punt. Michigan cornerback Leon Hall, filling in for injured Steve Breaston as the punt returner, gave Michigan a 14-0 lead when he returned the punt 76 yards for the touchdown. Hall got a key block from Edwards.

"I saw a little crease in the middle, but as I was in there, I got kind of lost in there for a minute," said Hall, who had stalled IU's previous drive when he broke up the third-down pass attempt. "I just saw a hole to the right, and I just broke, and I saw there was one guy left and I just tried to outrun him." Henne fumbled again late in the first half when he dropped back and was hit by Victor Adeyanju. Indiana's Kyle Killion recovered the ball and returned it to the Michigan 11. Four plays later, the Hoosiers got their only first-half score on a 2-yard run by BenJarvus Green-Ellis. "That ball is going to come loose at times when you get hit like he did," Carr said of Henne's fumble.

"He got hit and had the ball up high. We missed a protection, had a guy who got beat on a protection. They caused that fumble." Michigan began the second half in style as Grant Mason returned the opening kickoff 97 yards. Hart scored four plays later on a i-yard touchdown run for a 21-7 lead. "We just knew coming out of the half we needed a spark," Mason said.

"We were kind of down going into the half because we gave up that touchdown right at the end. My guys did a great job blocking for me. I saw a little seam, cut up in there and then headed toward the sideline. I was heading up the sideline, I saw the guy, and he had an angle on me, so I decided to try to reverse the field and go, but I guess when I reversed it, my legs weren't with me. I tried to head for that pylon, but I couldn't make it." The Wolverines put the game out of reach as they scored on their next two possessions.

Edwards gave the Wolverines a 28-7 lead on the 69-yard reception and then a 35-7 lead on a 38-yard touchdown reception. "They played eight in a box," Edwards said of IU's defense. "They weren't doubling any of the receivers, so we knew if we could throw the ball up top it would be pretty much one-on-one, and the receivers would have to make the play. And that's what we did." Indiana had outscored its first four opponents, 35-6, in the first quarter, and looked well on its way to taking an early lead, as the Hoosiers took their first drive of the game to the Michigan 14-yard line. But a high snap over IU quarterback Matt LoVecchio's head resulted in a 29-yard loss from which the Hoosiers could not recover.

Michigan ran on its first five plays, but on third-and-8, Jason Avant caught a 14-yard pass from I lenne to the Indiana 40. Henne, under extreme pressure, then hit Gonzales for the 40-yard touchdown pass.
