l'agcC-8 Smichv. Tollman 1 I. nun Undaunted, Mara Corday returns to TV A I I I I Ix)s Angeles Times Syndicate HOLLYWOOD-If Mara Corday seems to he looking over tier shoulder Ihcsc days, as Ihough some unheard voice was directing invectives at her, there's good reason. The attractive widow, a former actress, is making a comeback in the TV film business, a move that at one time was strictly against her husband's wishes. He was Richard Long.

Mara, new in her 40s, but still retaining that sultry look that launched her career, first as a cover girl, then dancer with "Earl Carroll's Vanities" and a film career in a number of roles calling for exotic beauties, is returning in a small part on Joe Forrester, Feb. 9 on NBC. "Richard couldn't stand to have me working in Ihe business after we married in 1957," says Mara, showing no signs of remorse or rancor about her late husband's stand. "I remember one time the producer of Big Valley suggested I do a guest role in that series with Richard. But he absolutely refused to allow it." Although their 18-year marriage was a stormy one-with numerous separations, threatened divorce action and personality clashing--Mara and Richard somehow carried on a passionate love affair.

"I was tremendously jealous of him, and he was terribly possessive of me," Mara now reveals. Richard often told Mara how much he really hated the business, which brought them to point- counterpoint. She loves the business. Mara says she threatened many limes lo go back. The longing welled up within her every time Richard brought home a script and she'd go over his lines with him.

But then, knowing how he felt, plus three other very good reasons for remaining a homebody--Carey, Valerie and Greg (now 18, 17 and 15)--Mara relented in her desires. Film Guide Shows to Watch by Pout Hennlger 3:30 p.m. CBS--NBA Basketball. Golden Slate hosts Washington. 5 p.m.

Shaw's classic tale about Julius Caesar and Cleopatra, starring Sir Alec Guinness (his first time in the role) and Genevieve Bujold. Shaw's Caesar is the aging, calculating Roman conqueror; Cleopatra is the scheming though frightened princess. Their coiifrontation becomes a verbal cat mouse game in which the teen-age Egyptian "conquers" the great Caesar after learning Ihe intrigues of politics and Shavian romance. The David Susskind production, taped in England, features a number of prominent British actors in supporting roles. 7 p.m.

NBC--Wonderful World of Disney. A two-part episode, "TheBears begins with a Vietnamese war vet (played by John Wayne's son, Patrick) heading for the great Northwest. But the killing of a mother bear by Indian hunters involved him in a feud between Indian residents and the park department, which concludes next week.

Michael Ansara plays Oliver Red Fern. 7 p.m. ABC--Swiss Family Robinson. Only in TV can you jumble history and'fiction and turn a contrived incident into a series. The Robinsons' deserted isle, looking more like Grand Central Station every week, has another visitor.

Jean Lafitte, the dashing pirate, no less, stops by to dig for buried treasure--what else? Frank Langella plays Lafilte and will continue if the spinoff for a series sells. Lafitte has two weeks (a two-parter) lo find Ihe loot in order to aid Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812. 8 p.m. -The Sonny and Cher Show--(PREMIERE). back and Cher's got him--or is it the other way around? Anyway, the celebrated split both on and off TV hasn't helped either one, so now it's kiss-and-make-up time--professionally.

With a new producer and director; it's comedy and music and "surprise guests." Among the tunes, ironically, is one titled "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do." But Cher can't really mean it. She's remarried and pregnant already. 8 p.m. NBC--Eilery Queen. A corpse wearing a crown of flowers, with six sets of fingerprints found at the scene of the stabbing, and Ellery has another dandy whodunit on his 'hands.

J. Stone, who's played more Mafia types than any other Hollywood character actor, is at it again. When an undercover cop is found dead, Kojak immediately seeks oul Donatella (Stone), a syndicale guy who everybody knows had it in for the cop. 9 p.m. NBC--Columbo.

A show with Ricnardo Montalbanas the featured guest, filmed last summer and originally set lo air Oct. 12, finally gets an air dale. Filmed on location in Mexico, Ricardo is an aging matador who sets a trap for a supposed old friend to meet his end in the bull ring. And wouldn't you know il, U. Columbo just happened to be in the neighborhood.

That broken-down car of his had stalled, and the local cop (Pedro Armendariz Jr.) asks him lo assist in solving the murder. 9 p.m. Man, Poor TV's first 12-hour film production begins with a two-hour opening of the screen version of Irwin Shaw's best-selling novel about life in postwar America, 1945-65, as seen through the eyes of two brothers. One seeks wealth, the other seeks a free and the many people they encounter over two decades make up the dramatic encounters they.experience over remaining 10 hours (continues with two hours Monday, then one-hour dramas on Mondays through March 22 with a concluding two-hour'show). Peter Strauss, Nick Nolle (brothers Rudy and Tom Jordache) and Susan Blakely are the young Irio seen throughout the saga.

Brit Lind, Lloyd Bochner and Nancy Kovak have guesl roles. 10:30 p.m. and Because of a rare 90-minule Columbo episode, leaving a half-hour prime-lime slot, NBC spins off a 2-year-old 30-minute comedy pilol. Red Buttons and Harold Gould coslar as a pair of senior cilizens Ihrown logelher who can't seem lo agree on anylhing.

i flOUTE 4 41-275 NEAR THE TRI-COUNTY CENTER RL PflCINO BOG DRY HFTER NOON BURT KVTIOLDS "He was a playboy; everybody loved him," Mara admits. Yet Richard shunned publicity. Perhaps the stigma of often being publicly mistaken for his dark and handsome contemporaries of the time--Robert Goul.et, Gig Young and Robert Sterling-- chewed at his innards more than he'd dare reveal. He once lold a writer, "I've had the longest awkward period in the history of Hollywood. I sign more autographs than anyone in the industry.

The fans think I'm Goulet, Young or Sterling." And yet in his last days, when he was terribly racked with pain from a lingering heart problem--which he never wanted Mara to reveal, even to close friends- he jokingly told her, "You know, I'll probably die on a weekend and nobody will know it. Who reads papers on weekends?" He died on a Saturday, Dec. 22,1974. He was only 47. "The most courageous man I knew," says Mara proudly.

Richard Long left Mara "a marvelous family. Mara says' "Lovely people, who stuck it out with me and the children through the end." Marshall Thompson, the actor, is her brother-in-law. Her father-in-law runs a ski lodge in Utah, in which she has an interest. And she has many close friends in the business: Juliet Mills, who costarred with her husband in Nanny and the Professor' Clint Eastwood, Dean Jones and others. Wilh their encouragement and her children now in their teens, Mara Corday decided'not to deny herself any longer.

She became all the more convinced when she found she could slip into a dress that dales back to Ihe days when she was a Universal contract starlet, along with Piper Laurie, Kathleeen Hughes and Susan Ball (Richard Long's first wife), One year she made Ihroe pictures in a row: "Su This Is Paris," "Man Without a Star" and "Foxfire." In the latter movie she gave Jane Russell stiff competition. She then had several roles in television. "What a thrill it was lo walk back on a soundstage again for this Joe Forrester role and discover it was the same place I worked many years ago with Troy Donahue in a Surfside Six show," Mara says. This role in Forrester? "Oh, it's just a personnel woman, rather haughty, businesslike, wearing glasses." But looking very sultry.
