Austin American-Statesman, Feb. 10, 1979, Page 18 time out review 'Ice Castles' falls on face By LYNNE MESSINA American Statesman Staff I was paid to see "Ice Castles." That's more than can be said for the rest of the audience, those unfortunate folks who paid the going rate to see Robby Benson, Colleen Dewhurst, Tom Skerrit and skater Lynn-Holly Johnson in this farce. Many people like Robby Benson. I would if I were 12 years old. Being roughly twice that age, he leaves me rather cold like the rest of this movie.

Fortunately for me, his role is confined to pulling a whining Johnson around the ice and talking on the phone in his briefs. The unbelievable plot begins when Lexie (Johnson) is discovered by ambitious coach Jennifer Warren. The novice skater is an instant Midway through the movie and down the road to the Olympics, Lexie is blinded in a fall. The audience isn't so lucky. At the end, Lexie makes a triumphant comeback.

No one realizes she's blind until she trips over the flowers. Johnson, making her screen debut, at least shows some excellent skating. But the movie fails to provide the inspiration of triumph over adversity found in "The Other Side of the Mountain." It's an affront to the thousands of people who overcome their handicaps every day. Their stories would have made much more touching viewing than this schlock. To producer John Kemeny and director Donald W'rye Shame on you.
